Re: hearing the difference b/w mp3 and WAV files
On some of the MP3s I d/l from Limewire (o, am I not allowed to say that?) I can hear a digital crinkling sound in the super high end. Like tape hiss, but it's sounds all matrix-y. I always assumed this was due to poor encoding at low bit rates, but there may be other forces at work. I don't think ...

Re: Recording Drums to an Mbox (any input?)
i'd bet heavily that one overhead plus front of kit mic will be way better than any live mix of multiple mics (especially if you're trying to do it all with Y cables!) unless you happen to be very experienced mixing drums live.

Re: unpadded closet
rule of thumb: smaller room = more problems so why do people use tiny vocal booths for overdubs? mainly for isolation (from the band, passing trucks, etc). also, if you put thick sound absorption all around it, it'll sound pretty dead, which can be good, and it's easier than completely deadening a l...

Re: Mixdown Degradation - Computer DAW
The L1?
Sounds like you listened to a good sounding mix, sent it into the computer, raised the level with the L1, then burned it to disc, and don't like the result. Could it be that you don't like the sound of the L1? Or that the L1 has the effect of making different mixes sound more the same?

Re: Beer Suggestions
oh boy, you guys like some good beer.
dogfish head, anything they make, but particularly the 60 minute IPA
geary's pale definitely rocks
did sam adams really get bought by bud? bummer. it's still the one reliably good choice in a lot of places. like airports.

Re: My old recordings sounds better using crappy stuff
also, it could be that your "crap" mics are actuallly better for the purpose than your "better" mics. are the "better" ones cheap condensors by any chance? they will likely give you more high-freq detail and faster dynamic jumps, but may be harder to mix well. try what wing suggested, but also try t...

Re: sound proofing advice
multiple layers of something rigid, like drywall, with something absorptive in between, like the pink stuff or auralex' version. the absorption is just to damp the resonances of the rigid stuff, which does most of the sound-blocking work. also, sealing around the edges is really important. if there'...

Re: Acoustical Fabric
the only possible worry with the cloth is that it would reflect sound, and therefore defeat the purpose of the panels. but it would only reflect high freqs anyway, and you are probbably more concerned with low and mid freqs. anyhow, you can tell if it's "acoustically transparent" by blosing through ...

Re: Favourite Stereo Mic Placement
i've been using AB (space omnis) a lot because my best mics are a pair of omnis. the trick with these is to get the spacing right. i try to err on the side of too close, so i don't get the dreaded "hole in the middle". i find that even if the mics are too close to give good localization ("the guitar...

Re: Anatomy of a Recording Session: the wedding
how did you set up the mics? did you have a stereo mount on a single boom and carry it around? or clip them to your head? or move mic stands around multiple times?

rutherford b hayes also lost the popular vote and was elected in the last firecely contested election. i don't know what would happen if this is a repeat of 2000. but it's pretty likely. i think if bush gets reelected, however it happens, it'll suck all around, even for him, and he'll leave office g...
