Yep. Soundcraft Spirit M-Series is rackmountable as well, but takes up a lot of space. You can get ATA style cases with top mount angled rack rails that might work for your setup. You can probably get an M12 (12 channels) for $500 or less.

Is the static showing up in all modes or just when recording? Possibly getting feedback from something? I was getting a noisy signal tracking a keyboard direct through my mixer the other day. Running the keyboard through a DI box fixed it. I'm working with a Digi 002R but could be similar.

If the tip is well tinned, it shouldn't be too hard to heat up copper stranded wire and/or terminal cups to the point they'll draw solder. Direct melting solder with the tip runs the risk of a cold joint as you indicated.

Tinning is absolutely the key. If the tip of your iron isn't bright and shiny, you won't melt anything.
