Re: Mixing "In The Box"?

If you don't have a plug-in installed, there's no compression going on as with analog tape. That red on your master fader is probably the source of your problems when you bounce down.

Re: Mixing "In The Box"?

If I understand you right, you're "pushing the meters" past unity gain within Cakewalk? This is a digital no-no, leading to clipping. You can't push digital signals the same way you would analog. Try putting a limiter or compressing your master bus signal to increase the overall level without going ...

Re: Rackmount Mixers?

Yep. Soundcraft Spirit M-Series is rackmountable as well, but takes up a lot of space. You can get ATA style cases with top mount angled rack rails that might work for your setup. You can probably get an M12 (12 channels) for $500 or less.

Re: optical inputs

I think he meant you can't go above 48 kHz. And yeah, you should be able to use both the analog and digital in's all at the same time.

Re: Building a studio

Your budget strikes me as a bit low, based on material costs alone. You might try running it by the folks over here: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/index.php

John Sayers is a good designer as well.

Re: Converting cassettes/lp's to CD's

I've done it through my Protools rig but there's probably an easier/cheaper way if that's all you want to do. I imagine you could get a soundcard for your computer that would accept the RCA inputs from the record and/or cassette player; maybe even one with a builtin preamp for the record player. The...

If you paid through Paypal, you may be able to file a complaint through them. I think you can also file a complaint through Ebay. Good luck.

Re: Why does my Aardvark 24/96 create this static sound?

Is the static showing up in all modes or just when recording? Possibly getting feedback from something? I was getting a noisy signal tracking a keyboard direct through my mixer the other day. Running the keyboard through a DI box fixed it. I'm working with a Digi 002R but could be similar.

Re: Melt, melt, damn solder.

If the tip is well tinned, it shouldn't be too hard to heat up copper stranded wire and/or terminal cups to the point they'll draw solder. Direct melting solder with the tip runs the risk of a cold joint as you indicated.

Re: Melt, melt, damn solder.

Tinning is absolutely the key. If the tip of your iron isn't bright and shiny, you won't melt anything.

Re: I got's me setup raring to go, but got a question, too..

Here's an old thread about mixing out of the box. Generally setting faders in your DAW isn't recommended, as it truncates the word length of your original recorded signal, degrading the quality. http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=14163&highlight=mixing+box As far as external clocks go, t...

Re: I got's me setup raring to go, but got a question, too..

I can't answer your direct question; but how are the built-in converters on the M8? Would you be better off running back into the 001 and using its converters?

Re: mbox playback problem

Couple of thoughts: Are you using the S/PDIF inputs/outputs? Check your I/O and make sure these aren't enabled if you're not using them. Make sure you've got the most recent version of the Mbox firmware; you can check/download it from the digi site. Mine used to do this sometimes and a simple system...

Re: Room testing on the cheap w/no computer

In my very limited experience, doing a spectral analysis of a room is tough with budget gear--and I don't know that it's something worth dropping a bunch of dough on. My recommendation would be to get a boom box or stereo and stick it in the room around where you'll be mixing/monitoring. Put in a di...
