The very first thing that I would do after having a few days to think about "starting out again now" would be to pick up this book: http://www.amazon.com/Mixing-Secrets-Small-Studio-Senior/dp/0240815807 Here is Mike's webpage: http://www.cambridge-mt.com/MixingSecrets.htm EXCELLENT resource that wal...

And, the latest issue of tapeop has a review of Radial Engineering's Guitar effects interface. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/radial-engineering-extc-500-reamp-guitar-effects-interface I'm thinking since I already have their re-amp box I could just run the output of that into a pedal and ...

This preamp also has a parallel unbalanced out that I send through my pedal board with a SansAmp at the end to kind-of-sort-of get an ampy sound. From the sansamp it goes into a Hi-Z input on my interface. That gets monitored. Both get recorded. Exactly. Man, how I lived without a SansAmp for so lo...

Reamping is either a 'repair" or "creative" process. I use it as a safety (repair) by taking a DI of the pure guitar/bass signal for possible later sound processing if the original sound is for some reason not sitting right. If you have the DIs and really want to bother, you can take a DI path befor...

I wouldn't sweat the "multiple conversions" thing. That was a fear that originated in the early days of bad digital conversion. These days, with modern converters, you can make multiple trips out of and into digital and you'll still be fine. Then again, I'm always more concerned with how things sou...

Agreed, but you should see what I'm loading up already for remote rigs!

You would definitely have sync issues, my suggestion is why not print all of your stems (at the same time) to the tape machine, rather than just drums? Sure! I may end up doing this once I incorporate it into my workflow. My RAMSA WR-S4424 is only a 4-bus but has direct outs on every channel. Easy ...

I heard that sometimes tape speed can not be accurate, so you can run into issues, as well as tape stretching, etc. So just hitting the tape and immediately recording off of the repro head is the way to go instead of recording to tape and then turning around and playing it back into the A2D? Is ther...

Using tape as an effect AFTER recording

Question for you all: Has anyone on here recorded drums digitally, say, through nice converters, and then went back and using an 8-track tape machine as basically an FX box, hit the tape for the desired drums sound, and re-recorded it back into digital? So, record digital, send basics (drums especia...

We are into the same kind of music. My advice to you is to use Logic as a tape machine. DO NOT be afraid of plug-ins. There are some incredible plug-ins out there for CHEAP that will sound as good as analog FX and go the distance. If you don't have a decent mixer/console this will end up being a bit...

I've been a long-time Digital Performer user (since 4.12 back in 2003, and in the 1990s at college when it was known as Performer). Though I have no plans of budging because I know DP quite well, I have considered a jump to Reaper or PT. But I really like where it has gone in the past few years (I'm...

I fucking love "Eyes To the Wind." The pedal steel is so perfect. That's Mr. Ricky Ray Jackson, who I just saw perform live with Phosphorescent last month here in Philly. Aside from having like the best name ever, that dude is the most ridiculous pedal steel and guitar player. That song was just on...

My buddy Jeff Zeigler tracked this entire record. I really want to interview him for TapeOp. It's really hard to put into words the double-life relationship I have with all of these people. They're my buddies who I hang with and have beers with at the bar. Then they make music like this. Which is li...
