Re: monitors

I'm still on the classic KRK 7000's from the 90's. I've been using these since 2001. I replaced the main drivers back in 2005 when you could still get the original Focal made drivers. Paired up with a Yamaha sub that was made to go with NS-10's. Those and a old boombox that has a line input. Then I ...

I've used Melodyne to "create" harmonies (from the original vocal lines) and then use that so the singer can "hear" what the harmonies are supposed to be
This is a great idea. I've yet to crack open Melodyne to see what/how it does, I believe I got a version with my recent PT license.

Re: VocAlign? or is there something that does this better?

Hi, The cheapest and best, not the fastest: The Singer Singing it until it is right. Barring that, how much is the Vocalign permanent license or subscription? Melodyne I don't think will align vocal s the same way. there are singers that can do this 100% (and don't need the help) and there are some...

Re: widening stereo sources in a mix

A lot of DAWS (like I think Garageband, Logic, Cakewalk) always want to default to stereo tracks when exporting and sometimes when recording. So sometimes you end up with stereo tracks that were really mono tracks (or should be mono tracks). Look at the "Stereo" waveform. Is it truly Stereo? Many, ...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

Now that it’s sold I can talk about it without seeming like I was trying to hype it, but the Burl preamps are gorgeous. I had a B1 and a B1D. I have interface pres that are clean so I let the B1 go but the B1D is just so good sounding on everything. Just a tad darker and thicker sounding than the B...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I picked up another RedNet 2 on Reverb. Picking it up in San Diego tomorrow. My Focusrite Rednet 2 went on the fritz this morning, so while I waited for their support (which was only a couple of hours wait... not bad), I went hunting for a second one to replace it, in case this one could not be rep...

Re: OH and room drum mic Techniques

- I did just buy one o' those printed ORTF clamps (at Reverb) that I'll get around to trying ... I've been looking at a couple different 3d printed ORTF clamps. That would chill my OCD so much as well as free up a good 5-10 minutes of me fucking around with them. Also an e602 (first version) user f...

If I go spaced it's usually toward the outside of the set, and I drop a mic cable too the floor to make sure then they are off axis for anything.
I'm not understanding this. Sorry, late night. you don't want your spaced pair's capsules "looking" directly at any drum or cymbal?

Re: OH and room drum mic Techniques

My drums are always setup, so for most everything I'm using a spaced pair. I was using a pair of AKG c414b-uls, but last year switched to a pair of Nice. 414 b-ULS are my go to OH mics at one studio I do a lot of tracking in. If i'm at my own studio, it's either MK-012's in ORTF or Warm Audio WA-14...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

Love my Jensen Twin Servo on anything (and really any of my pre's built by John Hardy). Millennia are my faithful old standby for anything that needs to be sqeaky clean and precise; but there's something about the big fat transformers in my Hardy's... I see you do a lot of remote recording. Do you ...

OH and room drum mic Techniques

What's everyone's current OH and Room setup these days for rock/punk/metal? I've been in camp ORTF for 20 years. I just started doing spaced pair the last couple of years. What makes you decide on which? I usually have a far stereo room spaced pair (87s 10 ft high on stands, in each corner) as well ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Tama Iron Works Studio series. The last place I worked had 2 and they were BY FAR the best stands we had. It'll hold your RE20 for sure. I know your woes because I'm used to checking on that mic specifically between every take to make sure it's not pointing at the floor. Sick of shit like that. The...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

For those excited about the germaniums, I’ve attached a photo of a prior one (mine are in lil walnut enclosures). The person who racked them (Sasha Katsuba, @gmnk.gmnk on IG) said they out of an EAG (later BEAG—basically the Hungarian equivalent of Lomo?) broadcast desk. They are crazy heavy duty—e...
