Re: recording old-time banjo

hi rachel, I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and suggest your namesake mic as well. I've had good luck with a royer r121, but not on banjo yet. I've also had good luck with a blue baby bottle, which I ordinarily can't stand on acoustic instruments, but on an open back banjo it was really nice. you ...

Re: what's your favorite multi-pattern mic?

Lawson L47MP is my favorite mic, particularly for its continuously variable pattern. The thing sounds incredible, and Gene (Lawson) keeps a copy of your frequency response plots, so he can make you a matched one later if you want. Truly stunning mic. Never heard an owner complain about one. Incredib...

Re: Blue Baby Bottle? Does it sound good?

I feel compelled to praise my baby bottle a little bit here. But first, I would not buy it as my only LD condensor. It's definitely a character mic, not an all around performer. But I luv luv luvit on guitar cabs, bass cabs, kick drum, and sometimes vocals. I also have a dragonfly and that is my new...

Re: help...someone wants to liscense my music

although it probably seems paranoid and too mercurial (at least it does to me), lawyers can be helpful, if you have a good one. I'm, in chicago and my attorney is in LA, and it's never bothered me a bit. The thing I like about him (and his bank account doesn't like about him) is that he only represe...

Re: Recording Drums/3 Mics: What Where?

damn, if you had another figure 8 I would be pushing the MS thing, but I haven't had much luck with the 121 as the figure 8 mic in a MS array. probably because of the difference in frequency response between the back and the front. so, with what you have, I would probably start with the 195 on the k...

Re: Oak Park, IL - any recommendations?

I have a studio in Oak Park. It's nuendo based, 24 channels of Lucid AD/DA converters that sound real nice, and a 1/2" 8track (otari mx5050) if you feel like going to tape first, or going old school. I'm still working on a website for the place, but in the meantime, here's our gear list: Tac Matchle...

Re: MIC CHAINs that werk ril goood

recently I discovered the dragonfly->langevin dual vocal combo. On a martin OO that is all mahogany and quite dark, it sound amazing about 2 feet from the guitar pointed at the neck joint. It can sound amazing on banjo, and vocals were fun, if a little proximity bumpish when too close. But on my wee...

Re: getting a console power supply made

thanks for the advice folks. I actually posted the same question on Klett's forum, but no one has replied yet. I was able to locate a spare ps in canada, which will be here in a bit. at some point today, i'm going to call the desk doctor folks and see about getting the old one rebuilt. There was a t...

getting a console power supply made

can anyone offer some advice on getting a spare power supply for our console made? we have a 26x24x8x2 Tac/Matchless which came with an Amek Series 850 power supply. The thing is chewing up fuses with reckless abandon. The fuse sockets are all corroded and don't grip the fuses well. It's generally b...

Re: opening recording studio

please bear in mind that charging money-losing rates on a studio will harm the economic viablity of other people trying to make a living at this. I'm not saying you should never do it. I'm in a similar boat (starting out) and I try to make sure that a client wouldn't pay a viable rate somewhere else...

Re: Advice needed for DIY recording of Cello and Violins

I have also found intonation to be a huge issue regarding recording string players. The really good ones don't usually have a problem, but you have to take care to give them an uncluttered enough headphone mix that they hear it well. Hearing the intonation of a cello in a dense mix for a player used...

Re: acoustic bass heads

I think they were used by a bunch of big name bass players in the 80's, when they were quite popular. Some sound very good for something with no tubes in it. I have the matching 2x15 cabinet which I don't use for anything. If you're in the same mistake by the lake that I am, I would be happy to sell...
