i never compress guitars, except for the occasional clean guitar that's too spikey or uneven. one of my regular clients is a genius bass player, i never need to compress him... drums pretty much always get some compression, but there's usually plenty of the uncompressed tracks blended in with the c...

i am wholly against this, as i feel that if you are enough of a rube to pay $7250 for a length of cable, then you ought to, as punishment for yourself. I have no problem with this nonsense. I think foolish rich people who don't know what to do with their money should be encouraged to put as much of...

I for one found it humorous, and could identify.

Don't get me wrong, I love 90% of my clients, even when they make life difficult for me.

But, Larry's observations are generally true of new, deluded, casual bands making their first couple of records.

I didn't see it as viscous at all.

It's tough to say. I don't compress anything that fits perfectly when left uncompressed. Generally, suckier the performances and halfway-there tones tend to get more compression. Sometimes you need to shape the envelope of a particular sound to make it stand out OR blend in..... sometimes you don't....

If you're having trouble with the routing, first ask yourself "Do I understand the concept of parallel compression?" Parallel compression is pretty simple really: Take a signal and split it in two. Compress the new "duplicate" signal and leave the other one alone. If you have trouble with that, take...

I don't have the magazine yet (its always a couple days behinde here in hte sticks). Is it an article on parallel compression? I do that all the time. but not in a DAW. It does great things to a mix. It's parallel compression, where both the compressed and uncompressed tracks are sent together to a...

I can't pull together an amazing live mix in a venue I've never been to with a 10 minutes for soundcheck. I think I'll try to avoid getting called in to do FOH for an opening act in the future.

I've run into this, too. Frankly, many people see the cost of having someone do work for them, and decide they're better off buying the stuff themselves. It's a fact of life. Only a couple years later, I hear stuff like "This stuff is just a bitch to figure out!!!" and "I just can't seem to get goo...

A P-bass pickup sounds for "big and lush" than a J pickup in the bridge position? No surprise there! On this style of bass, the J pickup is there for when you don't want as big, fat and lush of a sound. If you don't like tight definition in your bass sound, then keep that pickup off! In general, the...

As a general rule, I would recommend that you try flipping phase on just about everything on the drum kit, especially when starting a mix. The outside kick against the inside kick, both kicks against the overheads, snare against the overheads, toms against eachother, against the OH, against the kick...

Well, I live here, so I'll try stop by for at least one day.

I'm not usually too excited about the gear displays upstairs, but there's always a good seminar or two, and bumping into old friends is always fun.

Well, as always, the myspace players sounds like garbage, so it's slightly harder to be specific, But... I don't mind the lofi nature of anything I heard... except the main vocals. They're just far too thick and muffled for my taste. It sounds like you're swallowing an sm57. A simple hpf filter and ...

No, each new version of PT will overwrite the prior version.

However, you can install a second OS on another drive, and boot from that when you want to use another version.

I used to do that before I had all the kinks worked out in my PT7 system.

I am going to take the liberty to answer every question about phantom power for the rest of my life: Dude. It's fine. There you go. That settles it. Are you using an older ribbon mic with a miswired cable? No? OK. Then it's fine. Every once in a while a superstitious old fogey will tell you that you...

Taking home $20-$25 a hour is a pretty good wage if you're working out of someone else's studio. If you track for 30 hours a week that's close to $40,000 a year, which is a pretty decent living in this industry. Actually, that would be like a dream to me. I'm in college right now, but if I could wo...
