GT Brick vs Avalon u5 vs ?
So my band is going to track a few demos in mid-to-late June, and I've been slowly but surely assembling a decent arsenal of stuff for tracking live drums, bass and scratch guitar. I have pretty much everything we need, except a good DI for tracking bass. I've been looking around, and as far as I ca...

FWIW, "cheap" doesn't necessarily mean "bad".... I have guitars w/ Duncan pickups (a Broadcaster set on a weird Tele copy), a guitar with DiMarzio pickups (Steve Morse humbuckers on an old Epiphone Scroll), and I've had two with GFS pickups (the Hagstrom, and a Tokai LP copy with "mean 90s," which s...

Have you checked out GFS pickups?

I swapped out the PU's in a Hagstrom deluxe with Dream 180s for a kinda jangly sound, a li'l like those old Filtertrons but not as quiet... I've had nothing but good experiences with all of their pickups.

Bumped for an update: I just got my hands on an AT4033 real cheap, and it is getting the job done very very nicely. I tracked vocals for an acoustic demo with a 4033 into a 12ay7, putting on just a tiny bit o' compression via a Digitech VCS-1, and it is sounding great. Doesn't get muddy when I'm sin...

Yeah, I've bought a bunch of stuff (AT 4033, dbx 166, Symetrix 501) from them.... Everything has showed up eventually, and nothing has been DOA. Some of the stuff they sell is pretty beat up, and it's hard to really tell from their descriptions just what kind of shape something is in, but I've found...

Hey, thanks Minorleagues! Get Him Eat Him is, in fact, my band. Really glad you're enjoying the records; you can thank Mr. Joel Hamilton for the ridonkulously nice drum sound on our second one :) This is all very useful information.... a friend of mine has a couple of those Oktava 219s, I'll borrow ...

Hi, AE! Wow, thanks... we always have a blast in Visalia. Totally agreed that you shouldn't just start throwing money around on gear. Always know what you need gear for before dropping money on it. Start cheap and figure out how things work.... I've been recording for years exclusively with the equi...

I think a lot of it comes down to the pro / hobbyist distinction. If you're looking for a pro recording, everything subatomic pieces said is dead-on. If you're somebody who loves recording, learning about how different pieces of equipment work (and yes, maybe spending all day in your bedroom chasing...

Thanks! Fair question, for sure.... when we started on vocals, we lined up the VIP-50 against a bunch of other mics and ran them through the same signal chain -- we were all kind of surprised at how much better the VIP-50 sounded on my voice, especially since our engineer threw it into the line-up a...

Vocal mic like Milab VIP-50
Like many singers in indie rock bands, I have a decidedly so-so voice; gets the job done just fine, but nothing spectacular, and isn't always flattered by the cheapo equipment I have at home. We tracked vocals for our last record at Inner Ear in DC, and I was totally bowled over by their Milab VIP-5...
