Re: slamming a 1/4" reel
[sadly, you will not be able get the tape sound without delay] This is the truth. If you monitor off of the source you you won't get the sound of the tape you'll just get the sound of the shitty sony pre-amp. The best thing to do if you want to the sound of tape in your Adat set up is to synch an an...

Re: cheap phones
I just got a bunch of Labtech phones from a computer surplus store. They're big closed back phones . They sound good enough and I paid $5 a set. It doesn't matter what kind you buy, they'll be destroyed after 5 or 6 sessions.

Re: slamming a 1/4" reel
For this to work you have to send the signal from the repro (or playback) head to your ADAT. Because of the time it takes for the recorded tape to move from the record head to the play head there will be a bit of a delay. This will mean your kick and snare will be out of time with the rest of your k...

Re: quick guitar amp question
If you are planning to tour or travel with your amp I'd stay away from any new tube amp with circuit boards. Older tube amps (even the cheap ones) were wired point to point which means they are all but indestructable. The new reissues usualy break down when they get banged/dropped/stomped on by bagg...

Re: Success with cheapo (i.e. Mono) equipment?
Get yourself a Uher Reporter model reel to reel (4400 I think). It's like a cheaper Nagra. Mine is mono, 4 speed, runs on bateries, has good meters, a built in speaker and sounds pretty nice. I paid $10 for it at a surplus store but I'm sure they can be found on Ebay. You'll have to make an addapter...

Re: MXL Mics
I've got the 2001 and for what it is (a cheap LDC) i think it's great. As long as you don't expect it to be a U87 you'll be very happy with it. I find it a bit harsh for vocals (it's evil on a female vocal) but great for room mics, overheads, kick drum, acoustic and electric guitar. It's the same pr...

Re: Automatic Double-Tracking
My understanding is that the first ADT was really just a souped up slap back tape delay running at a high speed (30ips or higher?). What seperateded it from mere tape delay was that the tape speed was modulated a bit to create a double track that was slightly different from the origanal. It would be...

Re: a microphone
I haven't tried them on vocals but the Tape op DIY mini omni mics are great on accoustic guitars and they cost about $10 to make.

Re: Beatles Recording Session Book: Drum Mic
Holy Crap! I've got one of these! I bought it for $40 from a friend. I'll buy any odd-ball mic for under $50. He had no idea what it was and neither did I untill now. After reading the Mix article I can say that mine is a D19A (the one with the bass ports) it also has a bass cut switch marked Voice ...

Re: ear popping airplanes
I have the same problem. I just did a quickie tour of western Canada by plane and my ears are a mess. Try taking a decongestant an hour before the flight. Anything that will clear your sinus's will help. Last time i flew I had a bottle of water with me (another big help). I openned it mid flight and...

Re: what do you know about mono drum sounds?
I almost always do drums in mono. That said I just recorded a garage rock band this weekend with a AT pro25 on kick, 635A on snare, MXL 2001 beside the drummers head on the floor tom side and a stereo room mic up in the peak if the roof centered on the drums 5' back. A mono mix of the close mics com...

Help with Allen & Heath System 8
I've got an old (80's?) Allan & Heath System 8 board that needs some help. The phantom power and the pfl both gave up the ghost on the same day, maybe at the same time. Has anyone here ever worked on one of these? I'm wondering if the pfl and phantom power share comon fuse/chip/something..... Any he...

Re: Kick Drum
Here's a good trick if you want to keep the origanal tracks and fix the kick sound. You need a gate with a key in and a tone generator or synth with good sounding sub-bass. Send your recorded kick sound (via an aux) to the gate's key in. This will open the gate every time the kick is played. Next se...
