Re: Bass DI recording.. compression
I use my Meek 3Q as a bass DI - medium attack, medium slow release. Its okay, though I have very little to compare it to besides a Studio Projects VTB-1, and my recording bass is a cheap Johnson jazz bass rippoff. My main problem is trying to get the bass more 'melodically present' in my mixes, like...

Re: poor man's leslie?
If the turntable idea revolves too slowly, what about a $10 fan from Target -remove the grill, attach barrier to fanblade, viola! Probably get 3 speeds out of that sucker. I bought the documentary of Failure, called Golden, and there's a scene where Steve Albini (I'm pretty sure) was demonstrating a...

Re: Bush knew Of tsanumi, didn't warn???
I don't like Bush or his politics. Our government has a long history of mistakes and I'll criticize each one with the best of 'em. That said, for the last hundred years, when shit goes down, the world has looked to us to bail them out. WWI and WWII are great examples. So are all the famines, earthqu...

Re: Effect Pedal Decisions: Delay & Reverb
Forgot this is my last post: Anyone know why my Boss DD-3 delay always sounds way louder when I go from clean to overdrive? Do all pedals do this? I'm using the amps distortion. Do the saturated power tubes compress the signal, thereby amplifying the delay effect? Drives me nutty.

Re: Effect Pedal Decisions: Delay & Reverb
Good timing for this post - I just recently started getting bored with my too-clean Boss DD3. I don't go wild with delay, but would like two pedals - one for longer delay, one for slapback. I've been reading up on many of the pedals mentioned thus far. Has anyone used the DOD FX96 'echo fx?' Its pur...

Re: For fans of Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky or ambient ind
Wow. I like this! I'm jealous of your bass sound - defined lows with a bell-like clarity. I would like to hear the drums a little bit 'closer' or 'bigger." Could you reveal how the guitar was recorded? Mic? At what distance from amp?

Re: When's your favorite time to toke?
These days, I smoke 'if its around,' you know... friends house on the weekend, whatever. I enjoy it much more this way. Late teens, early to mid twenties - got home from work/school in the evening, smoked, and eventually just got totally unmotivated to do anything, even play guitar! Late twenties no...

Re: Anyone ever record electronic drums? How's it sound?
I use the lower end Roland V drum kit for my home recording stuff, and within the medium I'm using (korg D1200, usually at 16 bit, sometimes at 24), it sounds great. Out of 100 preset drum kits, I believe maybe 4 of them sound convincingly 'real.' Who the hell needs dog barks and shit like that! Onc...

Want beef? Close-mic with your condensor mic, right on the grill. Mine usually sits right on the grill, pointed straight into the cabinet, just south of the dust cap. Beefy in a detailed sorta way.

Panning techniques for just 1 guitar
I know 'rules' are for dummies, but here's one I typically follow: don't put guitar at 12 o'clock because you want room for vocals. Is this a dumb rule? Seems like most of the time, I'll double a guitar track, or have two complimentary guitar tracks, and either hard pan or keep them at 9 and 3 o'clo...

Re: eq and compression
As someone who will never own a professional studio, but loves recording, and has been in bands that record in studios, budget is everything and it pretty much trumps the philosophies of the engineer. Most band members are broke, and when you can afford only twenty hours on a Sat and Sunday, the pro...

Re: Acoustic Guitar Miking!!!
I love the sound I get from a budget Yamaha guitar with a C-1, 18" from 12th fret, towards neck/body - But, I can't figure out how to keep this great sound from all but disappearing as soon as drums, bass, and more guitar come in. Its like it becomes 'translucent' like a jelly fish.

Re: Great Sounds with Limited Gear?
I think I accelerated on my learning curve once I replaced the detachable boombox speakers with Event Tr-8s. Until then, learning mic placement techniques was a useless and frustrating waste of time. I will say that I wish I hadn't waited until my late twenties before I became more interesting in re...

Great Sounds with Limited Gear?
As someone on the lower end of the learning/experience curve, I want to see how people describe their 'earlier' works that were accomplished with consumer-grade recording medium, cheap or no external pres, one or no compressor, one or two mics.... you get the picture. Can you quantify or put into wo...
