Re: Your process

I don't know if I can compare to these last couple methods, but... I seem to have two methods that "work", one is song-based, the other recording-based. In the first, I write a song - it sits around for a while, sometimes not so long, I play it, I like it, my wife likes it. Then I get around to reco...

Re: Has a new zine replaced the old TapeOp 4-track aesthetic

Ahh, ok, so Grand Royal, Spin and STOPSMILING are three magazines with a bent similar to TapeOp's - any other suggestions? Of course, TapeOp is wonderful, and it's entirely beautiful not to mention justifiable for y'all to evolve and do such great work. But certainly there is room in the world for a...

Re: Roman Candle Harvest

To me, Elliot Smith's guitar sounds on Roman Candle (which I've heard only on free samples online) sound very, umm,, phasey? or flangey? I've read that he recorded to two four tracks and manually matched the speeds when mixing down on some songs on that album - that could maybe cause what I'm hearin...

these notes that i simply cannot even sing-- i can either sing high or low, but not in between. there's a huge amount of range i'm unable to hit One thing that I've learned in singing lessons that applies to this comment is with regard to the three voices which people sometimes call "head" "middle"...

Re: Looking for suggestions for really odd effects processor

The Vortex is good and has lots of whck effects, but it isn't the hi-est of fis. It also has a fairly complicated nonintuitive manual/operation. Live I think it would take more patience to prepare the machine that I have or want. But in a recording situation, where perhaps you could just rig up one ...

Re: Tolerance of bad vocals

You'll be fine. Just sing loud with your mouth open, on pitch if possible. Just sing with your voice. Many great singers can't sing either.

Weird singing is tolerable, but when performers don't like themselves, that's a little bothersome, so do whatever it takes to be confident.

Re: Raise your hand if you're a SOUND-NERD!

My sister gave my wife and me a vase/cookie jar for Christmas.

First I played it as a drum. Fairly good results. Then I spoke into it - better. Then I decided it would be cool to stick a mic in there, put my ear up to it and listened for a while - aawwweesoommme!

Re: Best of 2003

Hi. Smog - Supper. Indie-rock. Very cool, clever/deep lyrics. The instruments sound a little too disconnected, but perhaps that is what he wants. Missy Elliot - This is Not a Test. As usual, missy brings the beats, the rhymes, and is funny. Not quite as consistent as last year's, mostly due to lack ...

Has a new zine replaced the old TapeOp 4-track aesthetic?

Since it seems like TapeOp usually features mostly people using lots of fancy stuff, and fewer 4 trackers and mic spinners than in the early issues, I wonder if another magazine exists out there to fill that space? Could TapeOp have a zine branch that just dealt with home recording nerds etc.?

wiring problem on my electric guitar

I would like to learn something about wiring and such, and I feel confident enough in my intelligence to think that I could use my Gibson as a guinea pig. The problem it has is grounding, I suppose - it hums through amps and direct, etc, while my other guitars don't. Any advice? Good websites? I wil...

Re: Anybody know anything about sanding Acoustic guitar sadd

With acoustic guitars, intonation can be a nightmare, and is somewhat affected by saddle height, etc., so you should probably have it taken care of. That said, you could easily just put the thing into the guitar, and tune up, without damaging the guitar or anything - so likewise, if you wanted to, y...

Re: Where to buy a good thumb piano?

Real thumb pianos are very hard to come by. The 5 to 15 key ones you see are a world away from the huge two-level ones. Go to mbira.org to see one and to begin searching for one.

The make-it kit on one of the above links looked like it would have a pretty good tone.

Re: Stupid levels question

I'll attempt an answer at this, just for fun - "consumer" grade audio equipment runs -10, and "pro" at +4. I think that the Sytek pres would be designed to put signal out at +4.

Re: Acoustic travel guitar recommendations?

Hi. The Backpacker's great strength is that it is structurally sounder than a guitar with a normal soundboard. For example, I flipped my BP off a table onto the post of a chair and dented the side. A year later (still playing it), I got too excited in the studio and started playing it with drumstick...
