Re: drone devices/ambient accumulation

You can also buy a tamboura tape for 10 bucks or so, with humongous beuatiful tambouras playing C, or another note, for 45 minutes.

Re: creating an insert where there isn't one

it is a compromise with those units, but one thing i do on my vs is send the track to an out, run that out to an in on my mixer, use the insert on the mixer, and run the direct out from that track back to the vs on a virtual track. you are stuck with another ad/da conversion in this step, but if th...

small condensor matched pair - the Sound Room?

I'm starting to think about getting a matched pair of small-diaphragm condensors, and I remember reading raves about the Sound Room in a tapeop review a couple years ago. Can they really make the Oktavas worth more than twice as much what Guitar Center apparently costs? A 3 pattern matched pair for ...

Re: creating an insert where there isn't one

This is a good question, which I would have asked had I thunk up the words. The Korg D1600, which I guess is the same as the 788, has an aux out, two monitors (L/R), two master outs, and a digital out, but none of these are pre-fader like an insert (I think).... I think I remember Quasi talking abou...

Re: Music theory

I have to say that Harmonic Experience by W. A. Mathieu is by far the best music theory book in existence. He certainly gives you the underlying principles, and a lot more. He first explains music in terms of just intonation and Indian classical singing, then moves on to Equal Temperament - ie weste...

Re: drone devices/ambient accumulation

Dude, that frigging bundt cake thing rang long and low and clear for the better part of a minute. It's the most incredible tone I've ever seen in a peice of kitchenware. I too am a fan of kitchen utensils. I recently bought two lids and a big pot at a thrift store. The poor owner could not understa...

What is this thing? (Otari T650 DAT Tape Loader)

I saw this advertised on ebay - they don't know what it is.

Otari T-650 DAT Tape Loader

Can there really be a device the sole function of which is to load tape? What would it load to???

Re: A lifetime of absolutely worthless music

For example, in the song "Freight Train", most people play a C chord, then a G chord. The C chord, in equal temperament, approximates a set of notes in which two, E and G, make a ratio of 5:4 and 3:2 with the other, C, and a ratio of 5:3 with each other (remember, we're approximating here). Then, th...

Re: A lifetime of absolutely worthless music

So, it's the music you already know, whether pop, serialism, rap, or whatever, that is hard to process and less than beautiful in the austere/pure sense of the actual sounds of the basic intervals, and the music you have heard little or none of that is the exception to that. Well, yes - most modern...

Re: drone devices/ambient accumulation

The shortwave radio idea reminded me of this. AM radio station, tuned one step off of a country music, or other very tonal station, ideally some blues-rock vamp that stays on one tonality. Because its a step off, it mucks it up and distorts, I've had some of my favorite listening experiences ever wi...

Re: A lifetime of absolutely worthless music

I'd like to repeat something I mentioned earlier, with some reasoning, to see if anyone agrees. Regardless of innovation, most of which is useless, music has an effect on the listener. The source of tonal music's pleasurable effect on the listener (cf. Britney Spears, Sonic Youth, Miles Davis) is th...

Re: A lifetime of absolutely worthless music

Given that there are ways of appreciating lamb-bladder blatting barf noises being made inside furnaces with some stuffed shirt gesticulating archaically with a pointy stick and frowning... There are "modern" compositions that actually sound good. For example, the Bang On A Can series (especially Ind...

Tell me about the Tascam M3600

Hi. Tell me about he Tascam m3600 console, please.

Specifically, how are the preamps, is it sturdy, clean-sounding, and what is a good price, 1500 dollars?

This that I saw has 32 channels, and I guess you say 4 stereo busses.

Thanks

Oh yeah - OP8 I heard about from TapeOp, issue like 11 - and they are great on their album (do they have more than one?). From like 1997 though, I think.
