hey... i think i get the gist of what yer talking about...somewhat. "Pad at the mic pre: 100dB from the mic which will be blended with 40dB noise picked up by the cable = 100dB - 40dB = 60dB which will later on be attenuated with 20dB, but will attenuate "both" signals 20dB so the SNR should be same...

yeesh i've been upgrading my overheads for years. i have about 6. they all still suck at one time or another...

buy a bunch for different situations. the a pair of 603's and something mellower could take you a long way...

i used the pad when i hear something distorting or when it's overloading the preamp.

otherwise i don't.

i thought it was the bluegrass guys stepping up to the mic here and there! i read something here the other day about someone getting a board and thinking what a drag it is to have to mix multiple times to get it right as opposed to the computer...i thought that was a pretty incredible mindset...not ...
