what should I learn to build my own pre?

So i'm thinking about trying to build one of the 7th Circle preamps, I have next to no knowledge of electronics or soldering so I guess what i'm asking is what I should try and learn before I give this a shot, any references to books or electronics related webstuff would be great, thanks dudes.

I use the vintage warmer on everything, I also highly reccomend the API plug ins, easily the cleanest and quietest eq's i've ever used.
