Re: Vinyl surface noise

I've heard about A LOT of people rejecting test pressings in recent years. At least people who have done this for a while and know what to listen for. If you care about how your record sounds, know who is doing your cutting and plating, use a reputable pressing plant, and make sure that A) the perso...

Re: Neve flavor

I kind of love them all-- Neve, API, Trident, Telefunken, Spectrasonics, etc. They all have their place and given any number of circumstances, can all sound great on anything. I find it comical to suggest that APIs aren't "for bass." They were designed "for everything" and they're great on everythin...

Or convince your client to spend $35 and you can make it my problem. :D
That's my mastering trick for getting things louder without screwing them up!

(Although in the "mix" world, Boz Labs' "The Wall" plugin is a great fairly transparent limiter when used carefully.)

Re: MADIXtreme Help?

Have you updated your recording software or iOs lately? The SSL MADI Xtreme stopped being supported by SSL in 2012. I ran into issues with this that ultimately led to me re-doing my entire system. The guys at SSL were absolutely zero help. If it seems like it will be of any help to you at all, I sti...

Re: What music stuffs are ya's doin' today?

I'm taking today off, but for the last couple weeks I've been recording drums remotely for a bunch of folks at the studio, including a couple of TOMB members. It's been a lot of work, but it's been fun! After a friend called and asked if I was able to do this (I had been mixing a bunch of stuff from...

Oh, its 100% true!
I've done this with the sides of my calves, too. It's not as convincing as a group of people, but it works in a pinch.

Re: Favorite Hardware Reverb Unit

I've used a Bricasti and they're amazing, but I don't own one. Otherwise, I REALLY love the Klark Teknik DN-780. EMT plates are pretty fantastic (again, I don't own one, but I've used LOTS of them over the years). Sony DPS-R7s are also really cool and can be had super-cheap these days. Also really l...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I read a descrip of the Limpander cranked as like, "Velveeta in a dust storm". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSoaLLbHiDM I hadn't seen that video. It's a pretty good demo. Mine only had the input control on the front, but there were input, output, and a threshold control with screwdrive...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I went sort of nuts recently and bought a Dangerous Compressor and a BLUE-restored Telefunken U48. I also bought a Limpander from Mitch Easter. I'm loving all three!

Re: small mixers for tracking headphones?

I designed a pretty crazy system for Old House Studio when we moved seven years ago and it's been working pretty well. I found a distribution amp made by Rane and bought a few of those. The individual cue system channels (eight, to correspond to the mono inputs on a Mackie 1202) come up in the patch...

Re: Upping my percussion recording skills

I generally record tambourines from either kind of far away (a few feet) to "really far away" (other side of the room). These days, I generally love Coles 4038s for the kind of close stuff and a condenser for the farther stuff. And I've had a lot of luck with relatively inexpensive condensers. I lov...

Re: repair 414 headbasket

If you send it to AKG, it'll be expensive and there will be a lot of red tape. If you contact Richard Land directly (without going through AKG), you might save yourself a few bucks and some headache. Richard does good work.

Re: How long does it take you to mix?

It's really all over the place for me. There are a lot of factors: How many instruments? Do I need to fix performance stuff? Did I record it? If not, are there any issues I need to address to get it in shape to mix? Is the song complicated with a lot of parts? Does the band expect the mix to be dras...

Re: Need help with U87 XLR jack repair

I need to strip a little insulation off the ends of the wires that broke at the connector in order to resolder but these are VERY TINY wires and i doubt I can use a wire cutter and not cut the wire for something this small... I had to do this recently with a U48 I just bought. Stripping the insulat...
