I keep a lot of magazines around. People have actually been really good about reading them when they're not recording.

I've decided to finish this record I'm working on TOTALLY sober. All natural foods, no booze, pot, etc etc. My mind feels clearer than it ever has in my life.

Regardless of which method is "right", flipping back and forth between pothead and very very sober has been educational.

I regularly use the Manley Vari-Mu with an outboard L2 and heavy kick drum has never been a problem.

I am saying that stuff like Wilco, Arcade Fire and other "big" but not "huge" bands are going through tape. You'd be wrong about the Arcade Fire amigo. The final mixes of Funeral were done to tape. Also, a lot of the tracking (maybe just the beds) was done to tape as well. They were totally self-fi...

I'm finding the EH preamp has SO much gain... I think there's something wrong with 'em.

A little trick I learned in my former life as a sales guy: Listen to a track with the volume up to 100% of your normal mix level, then slowly bring the volume down, down, down until it's almost at whisper level. Most of the time, people will bring their voices down with the music level. When you fin...

marijuana and mixing

I'll admit, I'm very new to any kind of drug use. I didn't touch the stuff until 6 months ago - I'm 26 now. Honestly, I have no idea how I'd mix a record without it at this point. Reverbs, dynamics, overall quality (converters, mics, the instruments, etc) sound so much more defined when I'm high. I'...

Toronto-area - PopSongs project.

This is the unleashing of my new project titled "PopSongs". It's a monthly event taking place at my new Little King Studio location in Toronto where 5-6 musicians are brought together randomly with one evening to create a pop song from scratch. You'll have access to everything in the studio (drums, ...

If you can afford to rent both for a week, you'll have first-hand knowledge about the different characters both bring to the table. They're quite different acting compressors. I think of the LA2a as being better for slower dynamics like vocals, acoustic guitar, some basses... The 1176 is great on dr...

If the sum of the two signals is less than either signal on its own, you should probably invert the phase of the bottom mic.

The 29th was my birthday. I turned 26. My sister came up to visit and to see Jordan Knight of the New Kids on the Block - he's doing some kind of weird tour where he plays a bunch of New Kids songs to his now much older audience. I just hung out around here and enjoyed a day off. I'm opening a studi...
