Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
This. (Edited to delete photo of Swart Antares amp). My wife came downstairs and said “what is that sound?”

Re: How many guitar amps?
I love amps, I own about 5 myself, but if I wanted to talk myself into clearing out the stable a little and do some addiction enabling at the same time I'd look into one of these: http://3rdpower.com/kitchen-sink-6vel/ Wow, lots of options. I’d probably have to play it and see if those tones worked...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Back in the day we did some demos at a studio that used a 238, and they sounded good. It would not surprise me if it sounded better than the 688/488, not passing audio through those sketchy mixer channels.

Re: Going for it
For compression on tracking, take it easy. High threshold, low gain reduction. Primary candidates for me would be kick and snare if you have time to dial in the sound, bass for sure (overcompression hurts bass less than other things). The room mic can be crushed with the most obnoxious compressor yo...

Re: Monitoring is a mess.
Fortunately the shop I bought them from, and Focal were both totally cool and replaced it as fast as they could get another one out to us. The pair has been running smooth since. It's scary to think something that costs that much could be a lemon, but they covered their end of it well. No retailer ...

Re: Monitoring is a mess.
I don't know if the Focal's use a push clip or solder to the woofer, but might be worth opening it up to check and make sure there is not an intermittent connection. might save you a lot of hassle in the long run. Too late, it’s in the shop. But considering powering it down and back on fixed the pr...

Monitoring is a mess.
My monitor controller was distorting out, so I bypassed it and sent it to the manufacturer. Then the woofer on one of my Focals started cutting out. Tweeter only. Restart the speaker, woofer is back (for a while). So that monitor is at a place that can service Focal, with ominous caveats about « par...

Re: I need help High Passing
Sometimes I hi-pass AND lo-pass electric guitars, trying to have it live in just the range it needs. And then I play it back the next day and sometimes it sounds like a jar full of insects. Oops. Hi-passing kick is something I started experimenting with in the last few years, after doing a recording...

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me
A Catalinbred Antichthon, which is insane weird and difficult. I got an amazing sound out of this when I demo'd it, so I bought it immediately. Since then I've not been able to get anything useful out of it. Help me? I don’t think I could use it live, takes too much tweaking. I know antichthon want...

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me
I had Soul Food for a while, but in my setup the mids seemed a little honky and it lost its charm. So now in its place is a Barber Gain Changer, which is great for overdrive and crunch. It’s my basic always-on if I don’t want Fender cleans (mostly from a Fender Showman combo with a Weber 15”). For t...

Re: Alternatives to DAWs?
I still have a valid PT "permanent" license, but I've completely moved to Logic running on a recent mac mini.
It's working for me. Last EP I put together was 100% in Logic.

Re: microphone death
Beyerdynamic m69 went down, repair guy looked at it with a microscope and said a wire inside the capsule was broken, impossible to fix. A used one was cheaper than a new capsule.
EV 767– capsule failed somehow, no mictoscope this time, but again a used one was cheaper than a new capsule.

Re: MD421's right now
I got 2 421’s, which is enough for me. A white one from who knows what era, and one from the 80’s so probably a II. I haven’t actually done a comparison, I usually use the white one.
