Re: Upping my vocal recording skills

Won’t work if they left sitting out blasting in the room. Totally my error.

I will gate if needed but I suspect it won’t be an issue.

Re: Upping my percussion recording skills

Thanks. These are all great tips. Much appreciated. As for spring drum, it just sort of happened in one song. I will hpf all the perc when mixing.

Re: Upping my vocal recording skills

Thanks everyone. Group vocals worked amazingly for one song. For everything else, we wound up doing it individually. This was more about singer comfort than anything else, but since the performance IS the recording, there you go. I sprung for an AT4050 for this task since I’d been meaning to get one...

Upping my percussion recording skills

Since the vocals thread was helpful, we are now on to hand percussions overdubs. I’d love your favourite tips for recording: Tambourine Shakers (eggs, but other kinds too) Hand claps Spring drum I can record in a large “live” room with 9.5’ ceilings, or a deader, smaller room, or a very dead studio ...

Re: Upping my vocal recording skills

One other question: For backing vocals, I love the X-Y pair idea, but I'm wondering what to use. I DO have pairs of small diaphragm condensers: the Tape Op staples of the Crown CM-700 and Avenson STO-2. The Avensons are omni, so no proximity effect, which seems like a good idea. I didn't consider th...

Upping my vocal recording skills

Hi Everyone. I'm looking for advice on combinations of mics and recording techniques to enhance vocals for my current recording project. It's a song-oriented indy band, three vocalists, sometimes 3-part harmonies over a full mix, two guys, one woman. This will be my third time tracking vocals for th...

I'm currently mixing two records on a 2011 Macbook pro. It got a new logic board free last year which means I'm hoping it'll last until at least 2021, unless an Apple OS update bricks it. I have a BLA-modded MOTU 828mk2 that still sounds great. I don't use it much but when I do, no problems. I bough...

Gain Stage Fix for DAW Mix

Yes, it rhymes. I got overzealous and have a few DAW mixes that are too hot. But I like the mixes and don't want to do a total do-over. It seems like the easiest fix would be to insert a utility gain plug on each channel and drop it, say 5-6db to restore headroom on the main bus. Am I right that the...

Thanks everyone. I've been getting creative. Mostly overheads, but the close mics with no overheads (except for a distant room mic) have also been useful for a section where the drummer is playing with mallets. Speaking of which -- mallets on toms are really hard to get clear, punchy and authoritati...

Yeah, I didn't mean it for the polotics of the thing - even Ted Nugent needs to make music. I'm a flaming liberal, and my best bud is a right-wing Libertarian. But the 'tude of this dude ... I mean, imagine that first phone call: "Dude, you really lay it out there." "Yeah, well, all the cocksuckers...

The guy was a jerk in how he wrote the ad but values can matter creatively as well as interpersonally. When I was looking for a band, I did list "no sexist lyrics" in my CL ad because I'm not the lyricist but I am done with that shit for this lifetime. Got tons of replies, too.

Panning: Glyn Johns + 2 close miced toms

Greetings. I've got some tracks recorded with the "Glyn Johns" setup for overheads but also close mics on the toms (yes, I know, the technique was developed to conserve tracks/mics but that's just how the guy recorded it). I'm doing 10:00 and 4:00 on the overheads and I've been panning the close mic...

Thanks for the replies. I think we'll maybe talk with the owner once we have what we need. I've done sessions as an engineer in someone else's studio where I've hit technical glitches, software or hardware related and it can be tough. This is one reason why I asked. Back in the late 80s/early 90s I ...
