Re: Best economical mic for acoustic and vocal

Generally most mics use XLR connections, it's a three pin connection. The mic will have a male connection (meaning that it has the pins) and the female end connects there, with the male end of the cable going into the mixer. I'm getting the sense that you're not planning to use a mixer, if that's t...

Re: 24-bit or 24 mics?

I'd go with the mics. Get more good ones, that'll last a few years. Save some of your budget for a year from now when today's hot shit PC will be half price and this year's 24-bit sound cards are cheaper. Hey, I got Musician's Fiend catalog yesterday, and they're selling off the Delta 410 for $99......

Re: XLR lamp / flexible light

theres no reason why you can't power a single high-powered LED from the base voltage from an XLR not running phantom. sounds like a project! I will work on schematics later on this weekend! It's been discussed elsewhere. Maybe you'll get a dim LED working, but with 15mA @ 48vdc it's less power than...

Re: Basic Electronics Help

Sometimes antique radio restoration guys will empty out the can and put the new caps inside - newer caps are a lot smaller.

The multi-caps were a cost-saving thing. It's easier/cheaper to build three high-voltage caps together than separately.

Re: XLR lamp / flexible light

You need a special light jack - a mic input won't be able to provide power for a light.

Look up "Littlite"... they make most of the plug-in console lights, along with standalone lights.

Re: Guitar Won't Stay In Tune...

Try a different way of wrapping the string on the tuner post... that first unwound string tends to be slippery!

Re: anybody know how stewart copeland was recorded?

Sure Sting was the star, but Stewart formed the band. Yeah, listen to Klark Kent - all is revelaed! S_H WORD!!! That album is one of my desert island picks. Also love the Rumble Fish and Wall Street soundtracks. Yeah! I've got a few of Copeland's soundtracks, Rumblefish being one of the best. And t...

Re: anybody know how stewart copeland was recorded?

Ah yes, it's fun to go back and listen to those Police records. Sure Sting was the star, but Stewart formed the band. And it's pretty clear that the drumming is the biggest part of that sound.

Re: Radio Shack Tuner Spray (substitute for Deoxit?)

Whatever you use, please read the instructions. I don't remember if it was the Caig stuff or something else, but years ago a guy who was moonlighting as a tech was using the stuff on all the pots in a mixer we used... practically hosing the circuit boards down, when the instructions said to use extr...

Re: scam?

If you're really worried, just see if the police are willing to park one of their cars in front of your house for a couple days.

Chances are, though, that a scammer will just move on to some other potential sucker. Leaving the house to rip somebody is a lot more work and risk.

Re: Radio Shack Tuner Spray (substitute for Deoxit?)

The RS stuff is pretty good. I use it, anyway.

Just try it on one channel before doing the whole board. Sometimes the plastic in a pot will react badly.

Re: build your own mic TO #16

This really needs to be a sticky... it seems like it comes up every week these days.

The Panasonic capsule you want to use nowadays is the WM-61A, which replaces the WM-60AT which is the capsule the article typoed as WM-66. Got that?

Re: Phantom power - leave it on or off?

hey...we all learn new things everyday! I have been anal retentive about this fact after working with a "seasoned veteran" who would always tweak out and be extra super cautious about using phantom. Is there any reason why this mind set mind have been instilled in him? If you've been doing this kin...

Re: Phantom power - leave it on or off?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't? I leave phantom off unless needed. OK, there's a slim chance that some capacitors in equipment will gradually degrade if there's no charge. But that seems like a rarity; would I expect capacitors on the shelf at the electronics store to have a finite lifespan? ...

Re: tech work "a trap" for the aspiring engineer?

I've found that I really like the tech stuff the most, so it's no big deal to end up in that career path. And I'll point out that it probably works the way it does because good repair types are less common than people who want to do the creative side of engineering. Sure, it can sometimes suck to ha...
