just mic the side of the snare, about 1-2" away, pointing at the shell. I usually do this under the hats. Lately I have a setup like this (in a small dead room): kick - Sennheiser E602 snare - Shure 545 (or 57) on the shell overhead - mono AKG 451 or stereo prosumer Technics 3215E (I like the sound!...

the 'B' has improvements over the old version and is said to be more reliable. If it's in good shape, look to pay $800-$1200 for it, maybe more with dbx nr.

I would say that you're comparing apples and oranges between the two, although given the electronics (i.e. beefy transformers) the Quantum is a step up in sound. More depth and definitely more open sound. The Quantum cost much much more when new...
