one mic on grand piano

I'm recording a jazz gig and unfortunately I have to record the piano with only one mic. Any thoughts on where to place it? It can be either a Rode K2 or an AT4040. The K2 will let me do omni or figure 8 if need be. Has anyone tride the one mic technique from "mixing with your mind"? It looks cool b...

I've had great results with a 103. On one album I put a 87 a TLM103 and a C12VR up on a female vocalist and the TLM103 was by far the best on her voice. Everyone was really happy with the results. It also sounded really nice on her acoustic when going into a Summit MPC-100A with the compressor switc...

I?d been hoping to come to the show. Unfortunately I'm quite ill and couldn?t make it. Listened to a little Any Train to make up for it. I'm curious what you recorded the vocals with and what you used for reverb?

Just checked out the Brauner. Nice and cheap! Looks like they might be using the same one on Thom's voice. 414s for overheads on the drums, looks like a 421 over the shoulder for acoustic? can anyone make out what's on the amps? It's kind of dark. It's cool to see the speaker on the kick. I just saw...

omni and figure 8 - when do you use them?

Lately I?ve been trying to reassess my recording techniques. Even after 10 years of recording, I find that every session brings something new to the table and I?m always learning. At the same time, I know that I?ve fallen into patterns with what I do. Many of these come from experience, but some are...

Pictures of Radiohead in studio

I just came across this and thought it was really cool. A bunch of pictures of Radiohead working on their new album. Nice to be able to see some of the gear and techniques they're using. It looks like it's being updated fairly regularly. Anyone know what the room mike on the drums and strings is? It...

You can't insert a new plug-in with the 002. What bugs me even more is that you can't change automation modes with it either. Same with the Command 8. This is a massive flaw and I wish I had the Mackie Control instead. Still, much better than mixing with a mouse.

I was lent a bunch of TL gear for one session and loved it. I used the M3 tube console on drums and the 5051 on trumpet. I was really impressed. I've been wanting the M3 ever since. The only thing I didn't like was their tube microphone which I don't think is being made anymore. I put it up on trump...

I've used it twice now and I've been very happy. Both sessions were with the same kit and drummer, but in very different rooms. I usually use a D112 and occasionally a 421 or an RE-20. I've never gotten a sound that I was happy with as fast as I did with the D6. Nice and punchy but not overbearing w...

versatile microphone selection for a highschool

Hi, I'm purchasing 8 microphones to be used with a MOTU 896 in a variety of situations at a high-school. The school has band, strings and vocal departments. The recordings could consist of anything from a soloist (vocal or instrument) to a choir, orchestra or stage band. The students might also reco...
