How about a stereo tap from the board, then xy a pair of Condensers above the band . the stuff that's too loud to be in the mix, and thus not captured by the board tap, will be captured nicely by the overheads.

This works great for me at The EARL.

it corresponds with reality- that low midrange is where everyone is helping with the melody, and I would imagine just about everything resonates somewhat in that range. In my small live club experience, so much of that comes from the stage, that I end up cutting it all out at the crossover or EQ. la...

my iTunes eq sounds right set to "off", and if I want a slight boost, I choose "Acoustic". Have no idea what it corresponds to in real eq terms.

btw. Sennheiser 300 earbuds are the jam when JR has them on sale. your cats will want to chew them, so be careful.

Were you with the band? I think you guys stayed at my house in Fayetteville Arkansas back in, around, 1998? I was pretty much at every MoA? gig from mid-1995 on. My astroman name was The Brannock Device, and I was their FOH, merch, and tour manager-ish guy. Was that the place on the lake where we w...

"Weird gigs" and "man or astroman" mentioned? I can offer one. Man or Astroman was contacted about playing a Linux Conference by a LA-type DoucheBag (hereafter "LA-DB") who had gone into a record store and asked, "Who would be a good band to play a Linux Conference?" EEVIAC had just come out, so the...

yes, limiting is a better idea. higher threshold and ratio. try setting the threshold at zero, and the ratio at 4:1 of 6:1. that way, normal talking will be below the threshold, singing will just tickle the zero threshold, but a good hard shout reduces by about 6-12 dB. Also- consider the parallel a...

Oh, there are valid reasons why someone would want to compress their vocal themselves- I wasn't outright poo-poo-ing the idea. I was just attempting to make him ready for the possibility that the cool sounds you can get into your headphones or small room speakers at home might not translate to a lar...

compression does not increase feedback, it's the make-up gain after the compression that raises the noise floor and feedback potential. if you are using the compression to limit (high ratios, high threshold, quick attack and release) and not as a gain stage, you should be basically okay. Y'see, when...

I know I'm in the minority, but Sony/Sonic Foundry Vegas is super-stable and frying-pan-to-the-face simple. A few sessions ago, a band's DRUMMER even learned it on the fly, and was constantly taking the mouse from my hands to illustrate what he wanted.

Wrong Forum- This should be in the computer section. But to answer, I use CD Architect (PC only) to do my PQ code wackiness. It's nice to make CDs of live shows such that as you listen to them, them play like the show went down. But if you rip them to iTunes, all of the between-song silence and stag...

my $0.02- I once heard a Blip during the final seconds of a laborious mix and when I played back the mix, the blip wasn't there. I deduced that in that instance- the blip was only in my active monitors, and not in the path before that- where the mix actually got recorded! for a minute there, I was r...

Nope. The cats over at SonyMediaSoftware forums are real nice, and there's even a few employees that answer questions, and know how to ask the questions which reveal what you are doing right/wrong.

join up and ask.
