Granted, it's a very small part of an amazing drum sound, but the drummer used 16" Zildjian hi-hats. I'm not sure if they were specially made or if he just used two crashes, but 16", damn!

I like my Shinybox 23 (discontinued). This was the stock Shinybox ribbon with no upgrades. For the money ($165), I love it. For kicks a few weeks ago I put it up against my Royer SF-12. While the Shinybox didn't sound nearly as nice (it really shouldn't for an over $2000 difference), it sounded more...

I'd be really interested in an interview with Bayles. Specifically, I'm interested in the level of professionalism I've heard he demands of the bands he works with. Two of my friends recorded with him a few years ago. They took their guitars and bass to get setup by a luthier at the shop I used to w...

Thanks to everyone for their input. The session went really smoothly and was a lot of fun. It was a mellow three days, we knocked out ten songs, the client was happy, the house engineer said he might be bringing me in to help him on future projects, and I learned a lot. Now that I'm preparing for an...

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like I'll be leaving most everything up from song to song. I also like the idea of taking a break after a song and then coming back to just listen to the next song set exactly the same for a starting place. Also, just doing a vocal up and an instrumental sounds like the w...

I'm definitely going to have fun with it, and I'm not really initmidated, I'm just curious as to what usually works best for other engineers. As for the conservative mix thing, that's actually mostly what this record calls for. There are a few songs that I'm going to get to be a little crazier with,...

Your Thoughts on an Upcoming Mixing Session Please

I'm going to be mixing a record in a few weeks. The client wrote her songs, charted them and then flew to Nashville to record them. They were tracked at a studio called the Sound Kitchen with some excellent musicians. I've heard the rough mixes and I'm really excited to mix these tracks. We're going...

I'll put in a vote for an re20. I love mine and use it for voiceover, kick drum, bass cab, floor tom, screaming vocals, and even cello once. As much as I like my 421's, if I had to buy one mic that was going to be used for voiceover a lot, but other rock stuff too, I'd get an re20. Opposite of that ...

I'd try to track down a Lucid. I have an older ADA1000 that I picked up for $200.00 that I'm sure beats the pants of the ART and MAudio converters. It's only a 20 bit and only goes up to 88.2 but it sounds really good, was made really well, and was affordable.

I've really started figuring out over the last few years how many variations on the ns10's Yamaha made. I've heard a few people mention the 10mm's, one friend has a pair of 10T's, there's the double woofer version that I don't know the name of, and I actually have two pair of ns10m's that are differ...

I went to Hanzsek Audio for mastering today with the guitar player of the band. Chris was very welcoming and made us feel comfortable right away. His studio had what I expected from a midrange mastering studio - Apogee converters, Manley Slam, three sets of speakers (Mackie 824's, 624's, and NS10's)...

I go through my phases fairly regularly from no compression on the way in to compressing everything. When I do compress on the front end I compress at very low ratios (no higher than 3:1) and try to keep it from more than 3 dB of gain reduction. Then I'll compress again during mixing with similar se...

Thanks B! I have a session schedule with Hanzsek for next Monday. I'll post how it went afterwords. I just noticed he did the mastering on the last Wellwater Conspiracy record which makes me pretty happy because that record sounds amazing.
