Re: What is your City/Town like?
Well...as I said before...Austin is not the utopian paradise everyone thinks it is. I reckon, as someone else was getting at, that wherever you are its the same. I guess there is a pretty tight scene here...on Red River St. Actually, our label www.arclightrecords.com was just featured in www.rankand...

Re: What is your City/Town like?
I like SF...but it is so damn expensive! I like NYC too...but man, it is even more expensive and I hate the cold haha. Plus having a car up there is a drag. And I am car person...into old muscle cars and am trying to learn how to do restorations.

Re: What is your City/Town like?
This is true about urban migration...I grew up in Houston (2 hours away from Austin) and there is a big trend in urban living. I think it is happening for two reasons...one, someone told them it was "hip" two, people and municipal governments are coming to the conclusion that urband density is much ...

Re: What is your City/Town like?
Well...as far as Austin being an artist friendly city...kind of, sure. I mean there are a lot of bands here, but it is not all that friendly. Rent is high, few places to practice for cheap, and you dont get paid jack shit to play...thus, bands have less money to record. Its really a beautiful city.....

What is your City/Town like?
I started a similar thread about this awhile back...it was more about frustration of an oversaturtated city. I live in Austin, Texas. I love Texas...grew up here and all but 1 year of my life was lived here (was in DC for that year). As I get older, I hate the students of the 5-6 universities in the...

Re: ProTools Triton LE sync problem
A couple of years back when I lived in DC I did a lot of hip hop. The only sequencer that worked with our pro-tools and midi timepiece combo was the MPC 2000. When someone would bring in a Triton, we would use the MPC to control it. SO SMPTE strip->timepiece->MPC->Triton.

I would highly suggest Studio G in Brooklyn (williamsburg).

Re: If you dont have YOUR sh*t together...dont even call
Austin is more or less the same...clubs close, new ones open, tons of shitty bands, a few good ones. Actually, the clubs are part of the problem here. They dont pay the bands shit...probably because there are so many bands (5 colleges in the immediate area). Austin has become a little more "glamorou...

Re: If you dont have YOUR sh*t together...dont even call
Hey guys...cool, yall have reassured me that asking 50% upfront is fair and quite normal...last thing I want is flakey and whiney musicians haha. Like I said before...this is for the ones that don't come through...not the cool ones that comprise of 90% of my clients.

Re: If you dont have YOUR sh*t together...dont even call
Seems like in Austin, for every 3 bands that actually record, there is one studio. So it is pretty competitive here. I don't mind "chasing" bands. And I am not talking about all musicians being flakey. In fact, some are the hardest working people I have known. I am talking about the ones that ARE fl...

Re: If you dont have YOUR sh*t together...dont even call
Hey Jeff...I totally see your point...however, in a town like Austin, it is pretty tough to just select clients unless you have been here for many many years (I have been engineering in studios for 7 years...from small to large SSL rooms), but I have owned this small/medium studio for about 2 years....

Re: If you dont have YOUR sh*t together...dont even call
Haha, that is funny. I just get tired of the fucking wannabees. And by this, I dont mean people who have dreams of playing music...that is legitimate. I am talking about people who are dreaming of recording haha. Damn, maybe I should start asking for 50% from these jacknuts.

Re: If you dont have YOUR sh*t together...dont even call
Yep...its all a bunch of bullshit. How much is everyone asking for as deposits? I usually do $50-$75...but I am guessing that is not enought to weed out the pretenders from the contenders?
