to me, it's a personal choice. i know guys that do some pretty decent work and they practically refuse to make any 'decisions' early on about recoded elements. Everything is tracked clean and with a stereo image. To them, it's easier to make it dirty later (re-amping, EQ, plugins, whatever) or drop ...

Using my knowledge of copyright law (hooray college): To have a copyright infringement case, you'd have to steal from.... man, i bet that was a GREAT class. I totally agree - and perhaps the punchy, syncopated "orchestral" track is considered a melody too. Then they're REALLY screwed because they'v...

i'm just thoroughly glad that this thread turned into a big anti-satch, anti-coldplay thread. sometimes i feel like the only person in the world that doesn't like one or the other... It's so frustrating to have mainstream music listeners hear the production work of Brian Eno and think Coldplay is br...

thank you all for the information and honesty. i see a theme building here: more kick, more snare. A little more temporal processing on the vocals on "Berlin". (There is some, it's very, very subtle. Comes in more during the choruses... but apparently too little!). More bass guitar in "Danger" as we...

Please, be brutally honest

Hello all. Below is a link to a zip file with 3 mp3s in it of songs I've engineered/produced/mixed. No back story needed, just be brutally honest please! Feel free to comment on any/all aspects.

Thanks a million - this will help me grow!

Zappa's live albums are fantastic across the board, save a few of the really early ones. Lou Reed's "Animal Serenade" sounds pretty great, along with "The Blue Mask" (not technically live, but the only thing overdubbed is the lead vocals). Cowboy Junkies' "Trinity Sessions" David Bowie's "Stage" [th...

"Secret" Great Recordings

What's one (or several) recording that you feel sounds great, but perhaps not many Tape Op'ers know about?

Mine is:

John Cale - Walking on Locusts
clean, clean, clean. a great mix, great tracking. surprising blend of elements. early/mid 90's.

For what it's worth, I've found what I'd consider a credible source for our discussion of sample rate conversion. The book is called "The Complete Guide to High End Audio" by Robert Harley (3rd edition, 2004). Harley is the Editor-In-Chief for Absolute Sound. He's been a reliable source for me in th...

But, I will say, that if it's true that SRC converts an 88.2 signal to 44.1 by simply dropping every other sample, then you'd be totally wasting your time recording to 88.2. Isn't dropping every other sample exactly the same as only capturing ever other sample to begin with? You'd capture 88.2 for ...

Firewire! Even firewire 400 is effectively faster than USB 2.0. USB 2.0 can do 480mb/s burst, but its sustained rate is much slower than Firewire. And of course, Firewire 800 is blazingly fast - but perhaps not needed unless you're daisy-chaining firewire devices together.
