Tube rewiring (pentode to triode, etc) questions
Hey Folks, So, I've been reading a lot about some modders using the EF86, in their DIY tube mic mods. If seems that a couple of pins need to be connected, to each other, but I'm having a hard time finding clear instructions, as to which pins should be connected, do I disconnect any wires(from the tu...

possible Blue Woodpecker cheap rebrand
Hey folks, Does anybody with a Blue Woodpecker have a picture of the mic, but with the headbasket removed? I think I've found a cheap rebrand of the mic, but it has no(i repeat no) headbasket. It looks damn near identical, otherwise. If anyone could post a pic of their woodpecker with the headbasket...

i get it
i see, odds are slim, but not none. if there's too big of a discrepancy, between the resistors, it can blow, but if yours are decently matched, you'll be fine. if i'm getting his point.

DIY Spring Reverb Rack?
So, my next little project will be building a stereo spring reverb rack unit, and it doesn't seem that there are any affordable units, currently in production. I don't know if any folks would be interested, but, if I get a working version going, I'll share the info. My goal is to get the unit togeth...

Love Jim's advice
I have nothing, but respect, for all of the awesome work Jim does, and the advice he's given me on this forum. I'm just confused why the 7b wouldn't blow, but the transformerless 57 would, given their similarities.

Transformerless was easy and sounds good
Just figured that I'd chime in and say the "tape op mod" is really easy to do and does seem to extend the mic's frequency response. Could be in my head, but I A/B'd the one I did against a stock one that came out of the same pack of mics. They sound closer to the older "unidyne" ones that I really u...

china for a while
Yeah, my understanding is they sent production to China(diaphragm stampers and all) in the 2000s. Thanks for info on the tranformerless varieties of the SM57 family.

SM57 mods: Transformer swap vs removal / Anybody done both?
Hey there, So, I'm reaching the point where I can sacrifice a chinese 57, and I'm considering whether to do the transformer swap(for the Tab Funk) or just yank it. Anybody done both and have any impressions about the mods. I'm currently leaning towards just yanking the transformer, since it will cos...

ok, here are the tube condensers
Since it seems ok to post links, here are the tube mics I was mentioning: So, the Nady 1050 Tube mic that so many of us use as a u47 platform goes for around $350, the bad aax version is $189. That savings savings is the difference between a Peluso capsule and a microphoneparts one(though I think th...

Attention DIY Tube Mic Modders, save some $$$
Hey folks, If you saw my post below, I've been searching for the SYT-28, which is the factory brand for the now-discontinued ST/GT44 tube small diaphragm condensers. It's the platform used for the peluso and avantone small diaphragm tube mics, and I really want to get a pair to mod for drum overhead...

Where the heck can I get a SYT-28(factory brand for ST/GT44s
So, I really want to get a pair of tube small diaphragm condensers, to mod/hot rod. After doing some research, it seemed like the sterling ST44s were the best platform to go with money/quality-wise. Unfortunately, it seems like all of the major brands have stopped shipping that model, and only bouti...

dbx 166 mod question
Hey folks, quick question: So, I'm gonna swap the VCAs in my old 166 for the that 2180 chips. In this gearslutz thread, Jim Williams recommends: "Get the sip pre trimed. Remove the 47 ohm resistor from pin 4 to - v. Remove the 150k resistor from the wiper of the THD trim pot. Get a scope. Install ma...
