Re: I Feel Like Giving Up
Hey, I used to have an RX21. Aside from the lack of a ride cymbal and the ugly crash sound, it was pretty good. Well, a different snare would have been nice. So what *do* you have to work with? Can you assemble tape loops on an old reel-to-reel, or your own loops on the computer? How about playing t...

Re: What are the most annoying things about amateur rock mix
I suppose I should say something about the Waits sub-thread. Tom Waits is an acquired taste. Actually, every one of his CDs is an individual acquired taste. But once you're hooked, you're hooked for life. Nobody can sing like he does. Somehow he breathes amazing soul into that damaged throat, and pr...

Re: I found a drum room.....advice needed.
For starting out I'd suggest less mics anyway.
You can just get some sheets of plywood, lay them around, lean them against the walls.

Re: Rhythm guitar trick
That's something the old Roland guitar synths had - separate fuzz for each string, since you already had a special pickup for the pitch tracking.

Re: What makes a DI passive?
A passive DI is just a transformer, and maybe a resistor or two for speaker-level inputs. Your Hamptone pre includes a transformer, but also a bunch of active electronics (the tube) that won't pass a signal back to the input. Now you could actually remove the transformer from the Hamptone and put it...

Re: 42 years of old
Heck, that's not old... somebody just brought in a ~1950 Gibson GA-75W. I don't worry too much about remaining authentic. There are no original Stradivarious violins... they've all been fixed and upgraded in various ways. Do a solid job, use good parts so you don't have to open the amp up for a good...

Re: small diaphragm condenser
Another eBay auction?
If so, does it mean you don't trust us not to snipe it from you?
Anyway, I'm clueless too. But if you get them dirt cheap and they don't work / sound bad, I'd be interested in using the bodies for my own mics.

Re: The New Mackie Onyx - well, they look cool...
Supposedly this line has the new EQ section that they've been needing. Re. designs and quality: Actually this is where Alesis should have had the kick-ass audio equipment years ago. They were doing all sorts of high-tech manufacturing, including on-the-fly laser trimming of components to meet specs....

Re: Orange Amplifier Mixing Console???
Very cool, posting all that info.
The mixer looks sort of modern, for the 70's. A pfl function! And 15 channels with 3-band EQ. The specs didn't look that impressive, though. Bet it's one noisy beast.

I don't know either, but mostly I use polyester caps for no good reason. I bet you could find an audiophile page where there are massive flamewars over the subject, though.

Re: What are the most annoying things about amateur rock mix
(in no particular order)
1. Too much effects.
2. Some kind of overall weird EQ balance, which probably means untrained ears and cheap monitors.
3. Poor musicianship.

Re: Miking djembe, live
Treat it as a drum kit - the bottom is a kick drum, the top is snare and hat. So I like to put a kick drum mic on the bottom, and a 57 or maybe a condensor on the top.
