Same thing happened to me when I bought my new Macbook. It has a firewire 800 port and the 828MKII, along with virtually everything else, has a fire 400 port. You can go to Best Buy or probably even Rat Shack and get either an adapter or a dedicate 400/800 firewire cable. For what it's worth, I love...

I've brought gear one planes without incident, sometimes surprisingly. I used to have 9 volt stereo mic pre that looked like it was some kind of remote bomb trigger. I expected to have to show a room full of TSA how it recorded onto my mini disc player. It went through x-ray and they were like "Have...

Don't miss that Billie Holliday vid, either!
The story of that session is the fact that she used to be with Lester Young, but was currently with Ben Webster. It's Lester Young's solo that kills me every time. He's just playing straight to her and she's nodding back at him. Damn.

I checked out the Hammond and Edcor websites and found that they do indeed have just about everything covered. I am interested in making a 2 channel version of the 1567A as mono pres, not a mixer. I bought a semi non-working model here at TOMB a while ago with one channel missing that also had a cap...

CurtZHP, thanks for the reply. That's a really cool website. I checked out the DIY section, specifically the G9. That's a cool way to provide the necessary power. I've been checking eBay for old PT's as well. I know Mercury Magnetics make great transformers for guitar amps. It would be cool if someo...

Power transformers for tube pre

Where do you all diyers get your power transformers from, specifically for tube preamps? I'm interested in making a two channel version of an Altec 1567A. The schematic for it shows a PT with two filament taps and a 130 volt ac tap. http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/9717/1567apt.jpg Anyway, I have ...

My hearing has gotten more sensitive to the point of annoyance. There used to be a time when I'd be reading a book and then all of a sudden I'd realize there's been a bird singing the whole time. My brain used to shut my ears off when I was engaged elsewhere. Now, it's on all the time. The worst pla...

I've had pretty good luck using the dreaded spring clips. I just now thought of this, though. Maybe you could try cutting some strips off of one of those rubber jar opener thingies and wrap it around the mic before using the spring clips. As an aside, I was told that Norelco made the bodies for thes...

My favorite Stones' song, no less. This song is apocalyptic. It should be the soundtrack for when the sun explodes or when the comet hits. The dinosaurs would have really dug this. Merry Clayton just kills it. I love the punched in guitars. Keef's just a soul machine. I wonder if that was an Ampeg h...

You can't wire four 8 ohm speakers to be 4 ohm. Series/parallel will get you 8 ohms, which is okay with a Bassman as they can handle it. My favorite gigging rig is my 68 Bassman head through my 1x12 Celestion Vintage 30. Ideally, you'd want a 4 ohm load for it, though. Look up series/parallel wiring...

Okay, here goes. I've been repairing tube amps for the last few years. I've been working in Austin for the last few months at an amp repair shop. I've been playing tube amps for over 20 years. Here's what I've found over the last few months working on many, many amps: The most common early failure t...

I always think of Herbert Lom as Dreyfus in the Pink Panther when somebody mentions eye twitching. Then I think of Bananas. The Woody Allen movie, not the fruit.

I've been working at an amp repair shop the last 6 months so I've played a lot of amps through a lot of speakers, lately. I've also played guitar for 28 years. Here's what I've found: Older Weber's sound really, really good. I've experienced newer Weber's sometimes not sounding up to snuff and somet...

Yowza. Problem is that they are too noisy, but that's ok since I only use them on high SPL things. Do you think that the caps may be the source of the noise, or is it the op amps? It's probably the output transformers. If you have a scope or have access to one, check the signal right before it hits...
