success! indeed, it was the tube that was the problem - thanks for your help and clarification! there is that low level hum though. b3, can we take you up on that offer to post picks of your 'surgery' with the PSU PCB? while i think i understand what you did, i don't want to screw something up on it...

i thought tube burning was to get rid of any possible oxygen inside - though the quality control also makes sense. perhaps both are correct? checking cable, meaning the XLR cable, or the internal wiring? if the XLR, it checks out OK on the ohm meter... sadly, i already ripped out the mullard, i'm go...

So, short of replacing the tube (which I'll try tonight), is there anything else I can do? Would someone be able to provide measurements across the various components of the mic PCB that might be useful?

hey scott, thanks, that looks like a better option all around, worth the $50 difference.

mradyfist, that sounds ideal, but i need this ASAP, so perhaps in the future. i also like the idea of a marked level that i know is consistently the same, no cheating... :lol:

So I just took the plunge and bought a pair of Focal Solo6's. For the home set-up, the plan is to run from CPU to D/A of Lynx Aurora and then hit some level attenuator before the monitors. It seems that this would provide better fidelity than just using the converters and volume control on the sound...
