buy a cheap akai rackmount sampler and the sample disc from mellotron.com. That was my first mellotron. Got me pretty far. I actually have an Akai Z4 that's on the chopping block if you're interested.

You're entering a club with a lot of very happy members.

Seriously, I knew it would be good, but Wes and Tony and the guys outshined even my most outrageous expectations.

Re: A little late to the party, great read!

That would've shaved a couple of years off of my life!

Beautiful studio! Congratulations.
I'm pretty sure it did. I definitely have some sort of trauma disorder.

It's pretty awesome getting to work here though.

My advice: Don't just buy gear hoping it will get you clients. Get the clients first. The extra gear comes out of that. That's what I tend to see it at truly sustainable studios, anyway. Once again our resident wordsmith explains things in the clear, concise manner I adore and admire. Can we just d...

People have said it sarcastically so far, but just so it's clear, electricity moves really, really fast. Not quite light speed, but faster than anything else on this planet.

I'm not so confident on the economy. Something's gonna have to give with world record debts and uncontrolled spending. A collapse is inevitable. Question is: can you second guess when that will happen and will you divest to cash in before it does? Can you second guess market values and audio fashio...

Power transformers hum, the more so the more power they're drawing and the closer they're running to their limits. If it's too loud, put it in another room!

So wait, you have copies of the unmastered records to compare? What makes you think it's not the mix engineer? Or the tracking engineer? Or the band? I'd say, as a group, mastering engineers are probably more concerned with maintaining dynamic range than anyone else in the world, track and mix engin...

The Foote Control Systems P3S (I have the ME version) is glorious. There was a review in Tape Op a couple of years ago, I think. The Foote Pico is absolutely amazing, though a little out of the op's price range. However I picked a used prototype up for a song, so they're out there if you keep your ...

Yeah, the 54 series stuff doesn't sound much like the earlier, discrete class A stuff, but they're awesome little desks. If you're thinking that it would be useful for adding some outboard gear to your workflow as well as mixing I highly recommend it (assuming the price is right). If you're more wor...

I know "buss compressors" aren't really a whole separate thing, I was just thinking of them as a vague category defined by what people commonly use and like, not by any technical specifications. It's good to know that it's not absolutely necessary to worry about tightly matched stereo pairs or "pro...

What Rev is your 1176 clone? :) I've used a pair of D's unlinked on the mix bus before happily. The GSSL is a great comp, but only if you're going to build it yourself, you're just asking for trouble buying someone else's DIY especially with a ubiquitous project like that one. We had the Black Lion ...

analog - smooth, unchopped-up reality. . I think this board needs a sticky with a quantum mechanics primer to dissuade this kind of insidious dismissive thinking. But other than that little misstep that's all totally good advice. I like recording to tape, but if the option is a shitty dell soundcar...

Credit is dangerous, but it's also a very powerful tool. I'd make a concerned effort not to take out any loan that you can't already pay back with the consistent work you're already getting. Avoid store-offered financing like the plague, they don't offer it for your benefit. 0% APR cards are a bette...
