Sounds like you just grabbed the wrong package. I bought my my breakout cables (the ones you are describing) there.

It looks like a spider - black rectangle with 4 legs on either side. Should have four numbers on it. If you take a tiny screwdriver and pry up, it ought to come out. You also should be able to find the other one that is the same( by the number designation). These are readily available online...oh, I...

Those have socketed op-amps. Mine had one of that was bad, so that side was noisy.
I think you can swap them and discover whether that is the problem.
