this is as good a place as any to ask - i'm not the only one here that will want to know... the name of those polarity-testing boxes i saw once in a studio. one box plays a pulse through a little speaker, this gets held in front of the mic. the other box is held in front of the speaker, has a littl...

Re: No more EQ magazine, magazines consolidate!

If only there was a live-sound-centric equivalent to TapeOp.

ALL of the live sound magazines (I think there are two) really do suck. And the interviews with various people make the subjects sound like complete idiots.

It depends how the laptop is setup. It would be an expresscard, not PCI. They are made for laptops. So if the USB is an expresscard it can be replaced with a firewire expresscard. A lot of laptops have an expresscard slot, but the macbook doesn't; the macbook pro does. I was just thinking that mayb...

What kind of worthlessness? Your telling me you can't take out a usb drive and put firewire card in its place? In a laptop? Pray tell me how you'd remove the "USB drive" and replace it with a "firewire card." I see it doesn't have an expansion slot, but it seems like you would be able to take out t...

A simple XLR Y-cable will work 99.99% of the time. Go for it. Yup, unless you need to run phantom from one of the split ends. You can get some crap then, and might get some phantom running back down the other side of the y. Doesn't matter, unless the other input on the split cannot stand off the 48...

but i heard that a major recording studio (in their money is no object sort of ways) wanted to know if the new SSD drives actually SOUND better. If what i heard is true, their golden ears could tell the difference and preferred the SSD over the older type when they did a shoot out. Well, that's the...

Re: Behringer MIC100 Mic pre. ANY THOUGHTS??

I have a client looking to purchase a few mic pre's for his home studio. At first I thought about hooking him up with a used API 4channel Lunch box that my former studio still had in inventory, but it turns out that the staff engineers are still using it from time to time. The current API rack is o...

But I read in Mix Magazine where Wes Dooley said if DC through a winding magnetizes the core material of the output transformer and it becomes less linear. So are we really out of the water with the phantom used with ribbon mics issue? Arrrrgh .... with phantom power, the 48 V is applied to both pi...

Re: RME ADI-2 feeding clock info to iMac

I'm setting up a little project studio at home, and I have brought my under-utilized RME ADI-2 to be the ins 'n' outs. I have it hooked up through TOSlink, and if I slave the RME to the clock from the computer, everything is hunky-dory. Audio goes in, audio goes out, no obvious clocking errors. I w...

Firewire is pretty robust (especially on the Mac). It will be around as long as consumers and more importantly pros say it should be. Dont let the hype fool you. Of course I may be way off on this Of course, if Apple wanted firewire to stick around they would do something different than, say, 4 USB...

Re: Symetrix sx 202 issues.

I've had a modded sx202 for awhile now. A friend helped me, well, did the McQuire mods for me. It worked great for a number of years. However, lately, the second channel will eventually start getting really distorted. If I power down the unit for a few minutes, plug it back in, its all back to norm...

Re: The dreaded "self assigned IP"

Hi all, from time to time, with various routers and airport configurations, my MacBookPro likes to stop being able to connect to internet and, when asked about what's wrong, says that he has a self assigned IP and may not be able to connect to the internet. Some silly workarounds sometimes give res...

I guess iTunes' updater is bundled in with the OS on a Mac, so it doesn't have to do anything special, extra, to bog you down. That's the upside of a closed, proprietary system. I still don't think the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. I even prefer Windows over Mac because at least it's somewhat op...
