Sparks are brilliant. A few of their albums were brought up in the album covers thread a while back. I noticed that their Island albums came out on CD in the UK recently. I have them on a variety of formats: vinyl, cassette, out-of-print Japanese CD from the late 80's, cassette dubs from vinyl, etc....

Yes, the bias switch needs to be flipped on playback, if it has one. Some decks have sensors that pick up the holes in the cassette shell and "know" which setting to use. For NR, it's best to check both positions and see what sounds better. In some cases, if something was recorded with the NR on has...

Wow. And I thought our student workers were unmotivated. They spend their entire shift on the Internet and refuse to do work, but they're not quite that cheeky...

Re: When the label says "It's getting mastered at the p

Well, if you're going to vinyl, you're not going to want to compress the crap out of it. If you can't get them to agree to master it somewhere else (which you may not be able to - some plants only press what they master), then get it sounding as much like you want it to come back sounding as you can...

That's awesome. Speaking of, I just picked up a mono copy of Absolutely Free for twenty bucks this weekend. It's not radically different, but interesting nonetheless.

All I can say is that I wish someone had carefully considered the mic locker where I went to school. We had a 4 or 5 drawer unit full of SM57s, RE-20s, C-1000s, and a couple that I forget (another cardoid condenser and an omni). There were also a couple of SM58s, but you had to go check them out fro...

also, I just hate remix/remasters in general, because we all know how much artist/engineer work goes into getting it how you wanted it to sound, and then some other dude comes in, brings all this weird shit out, that they maybe didn't want there in the first place, and it just bothers me. ie: Jeff ...

(The precise total length, number of tracks, and length of tracks, from what I'm told...) Just remember, that if you do the CDDB thing with a burn, and change even one tiny thing and burn another disc, it won't be recognised. That's not entirely true. The CBBD systems match first to a disc checksum...

Outside. They played opposite home plate at Dolphin Stadium (also home to the Marlins for a couple more years). I sure hope that I can play with that kind of energy when I'm Andy Summers' age. No shit. I think tonight was the first (and probably last) time I've ever seen anyone his age do a split jump off a drum riser. Crazy. Solo in "So Lonely" was ok tonight, but not brilliant. The ones in "When the World ...

Anything by Led Zeppelin. Especially the fourth album. If I never have to hear "Stairway" again... I say this having just recently bought a copy of LZ II. Back in Black is ok, but Highway to Hell and Powerage are better. And I like pretty much everything in this thread. Even though some of it is ove...

BION, i wasn't talking about Norman "Hurricane" Smith. Yeah, but I was. And it was true. Norman Smith, although and experienced and good balance engineer, he was an inexperienced producer when he started working with the Floyd. They were the first band assigned to him as producer. You're goin...

Also I am sure the Beatles had significantly more time and resources from Abbey Road then newcomers Pink Floyd. More resources, probably. Time, they had lots of. Once they started recording and realized how long it was going to take to get the album to sound the way they wanted, they renegotiated t...
