Distortion + and Ross more high end crispy/fizzy (I associate Husker Du's guitar tones with these pedals). Tube Screamers - can be nasally due to mid-hump/bass-cut, typically not as much hissy distortion on tap compared to a Dist +. (Lots of boutique pedals are variations on the TS circuit...) So ma...

+1 on DIY or on modding. Pick up a cheapy used TS-9 tube screamer, and you can do a few simple, quick mods to change the clipping flavor, bass response, etc. (search the interweb for 'Technology of the Tube Screamer' -- great resource). BTW, if I'm not mistaken, the Danelectro Daddy-O distortion is ...

Good topic! I have two greatest song moments that came to mind immediately: 1) MC5's live album, "And right now, right now, it's time to . . . KICK OUT THE JAMS [expletive]!!!", then the band lurches into those big old power chords. 2) Hendrix, Voodoo Chile, after the intro guitar line, transition t...

I got hooked on the DIY bug after (having NO electronics background) successfully building a Tweak-O kit from Small Bear ( http://www.smallbearelec.com/home.html ). Followed this with lots of lurking on http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/ . Some cool projects on Tonepad http://www.tonepad.com/ wo...

Just stumbled across this thread -- great suggestions here, definitely some adds to my need-to-see list. I may have missed it, but I didn't see the Fugazi documentary Instrument mentioned. One of my favorite films, a good history of the band and their m.o., some great live footage and from the studi...

Digital Performer: is upgrading from v5 to v6 worth it?
A bandmate is upgrading his project studio, used for recording and mixing rock bands. No film scoring, limited MIDI use -- pretty basic hit-record-and-lay-down-some-tracks stuff at this point... He just picked up a nice Mac and a used version of Digital Performer 5 with a MOTU interface (had been us...

Yeah, I've seen it -- enjoyed the film quite a bit, even though I'm not much of a fan of either band's music, I think just to watch the egos involved. Some definite trainwreck, "oh god, he didn't really just say/do that " moments. Joel Gion -- he's my vote for hero of the movie. Oh yeah, and I loved...

Wilco also have a song called Spiders (kidsmoke) that is nearly identical to Neu! I am not complaining however. I thought the album version of Spiders (kidsmoke) was a charming curiosity, a pretty blatant krautrock homage, but I didn't find myself returning to it. The version of that song that appe...

Sorry - I should have included my system info. PC running tracktion 2; it's a bare-bones el cheapo setup I use for tracking home demos and mixing friends' stuff, but I like the interface and it works great for my needs. I'm still learning my monitors, and I'm a visual person, so I'm thinking a simpl...

VST spectrum/frequency analyzer plugins
Looks like there are lots of freeware options for VST spectrum analyzers out there...
1) In general, do you use a frequency analyzer regularly?
2) Have a favorite analyzer plugin you'd recommend?
Thanks in advance...

Some rock tracks - your thoughts?
I recently joined these guys on bass guitar duty. Dirty sorta punkish rock, few songs much beyond the 3-minute mark, two guitars + bass + drums, you know the drill? http://profile.myspace.com/theyoungflyers Curious for feedback on recording quality of any of the tunes, but ?Ode to Projectiles? and ?...
