I used an old sony DAT for guitar distortion one time, but wasn't really happy with the results. It was impossible to tell how much of the distortion was coming from the tube pre I had in front of it, how much from the analog input circuitry of the DAT, and how much from ADC itself. Not a big deal, ...

the Best Sounding Digital Distortion
This is a weird thing for a first post, I guess. I thought it might be fun to see if anybody has any serious answers to the question, though. The topic is digital distortion of the "All bits on" type, and which software produces the best, or most useful sound in this state. I've used this technique ...

dunlop purples. I began reading this thread thinking "your mic's transient response is too fast." Still haven't actually listened to the sample. Nobody ever mentioned changing the mic, but I think the OP stumbled across my answer when he picked up the 58. I have found that condensers and dynamics wi...

i'm listening on computer speakers. There not really bad, but not the best. It's also an mp3. These factors, plus the fact that "over-compressed" is pretty much the norm nowadays make it difficult for me to answer that question. What I can say is that it sounded to me like the drums were ducking out...

sounds like you did pretty well, considering what you had to work with. That drummer sucks! (...hope it's not you...) My dad tells a story about a drummer in a band he was in once "He'd drop a beat in one measure and make up for it by adding a beat in the next. Didn't want to be a beat-off." The dru...

I've always considered the possiblities of having several different version of a recording geared toward different listening environments. There could be the "consumer" version meant to translate as well as possible to as many different systems as possible. This is the way most projects are mixed an...

I actually do this quite a bit. In my experience there is nothing better for recording a stereo mix of a live performace than a "Hi-Fi" VHS machine. Either send a good mix from the board or set up a stereo mic in the room, plug it into the audio input on the VHS, pop in a tape, walk away for up to 6...

releasing mulitple mixes
There was a thread something like this around here somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. I think that thread was talking more about what I would call "remixes" - drastically different sounding version of a given recording. I've always considered the possiblities of having several different version...

Another relatively common use of a side chain is the "keyed gate." It's much the opposite of the "ducker." Run a guitar signal into the main input of a noise gate or expander with a side chain (rarely called "key") input. Run a percussive type of sound, say a submix of the kick and snare, into the s...

especially when your clients keep passing you bowls... And I was going to say, speaking of recording my own stuff, that I often hear it different after the recording or mixing "session", when I'm sober. i know lots of people feel its completely unprofessional to work that way. certainly there are t...

The samsamps are great at what they do. I recorded exclusively with mine for years. Then I bought a Behringer V-amp, and never looked back. When I got it in 2001, I tried every amp modeler they had in the store. Vox, Korg, Line6, none of them sounded quite as good to my ears as the Behringer. At the...
