I have 421s but the off axis sounds always get to me.

Re: Hot tips for recording a mandolin?
So I guess you personally wouldn’t even consider a dynamic mic?

Re: Hot tips for recording a mandolin?
Dynamics, eh? I don't have a m201, but I do have a few dynamic choices - m88, md421, telafunken m80, various sundry... It might be worth pointing out that there won't be any chopping going on, this guys chords ring out and he's got a beautiful sense of rhythm, I want him fitting into the mix like an...

Re: I’m about to record some drums, help me not screw it up
I was pleasantly surprised when the snare mic's bleed from the high hat and the kick actually made the mono overhead sound better, and I know that is possible with tom mics too, but man - so many potential problems! To be perfectly honest, I would probably be prepared to just mute the tom mics excep...

Re: I’m about to record some drums, help me not screw it up
Okay, this is three posts in a row by yours truly, but it dawned on me that I should add some closure here and say that I’m pretty happy with how the tracks turned out. The weakest link is the toms, but luckily he didn’t use them much, and where he did I was able to copy the fills to another track a...

Hot tips for recording a mandolin?
My first thought is to use an sdc and a ribbon (Lauten la120 and Breyer m160) so that I can do some blending in the mixes. My room is untreated, but I have a vocal reflection filter that should help to get a more focused sound. Would putting blankets up behind him be overkill? The mando player is go...

Re: How would you cop this bass sound?
I’m all kinds of torn about this. I don’t want to recut all the bass parts, mainly because I don’t remember them lol. I was kind of hoping I could do some high and low passing on the existing parts, and do something about how wooly the sound is. Also, I suppose trying the flatwounds out on my p bass...

Re: How would you cop this bass sound?
I ordered some flatwounds. I’m not sure If I’ll be tempted to replace the current bass parts, but you never know. Everything’s pretty much a scratch track anyway lol

How would you cop this bass sound?
How would you cop this bass sound? It’s full and articulate, not wooly at all, as much bass as you need, but very well behaved and staying in its lane…

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I haven't received them yet, but they are on the way - a pair of Lauten LA-120 SDCs! They come with cardioid and omni caps (putting my Jecklin disc back into play if I can find the damn thing) and should be here in time to track a mandolin next weekend and to hopefully recut some less than optimum a...

I don’t doubt it at all, I’m pretty jazzed with the way the mono capture went!

Hell yeah! I've already enjoyed the singles, and I'm glad there is more to listen to now. I'm a fan! The Junkshop looks very cool too.

Re: My two-tone m160
Mine took a spill a while back and it dented the grill. It seems fine, but I’m worried it might be off just because it took the hit. It’s sounds fine I think, I might just be paranoid, and it might not be the little delicate flower I was led to believe it was. That dent tho… You should be able to o...
