Ribbon Microphones- Variable impedance preamp
Thinking about getting a preamp with variable input impedance for use with a Beyer ribbon... Summit has a reasonably priced tube/ solid-state hybrid (2BA-221)... How much of an issue is impedance matching with these things? Night and day, or really subtle?...Dean

Re: Please Help Me ;-) Studio Wiring questions
With an older recorder like that one, you may have other problems besides a ground loop. Power supplies can get kinda funky after forty years..Also, if the recorder has unbalanced connections as I assume it does, your not going to be able to lift ground by cutting wires.. You will probably want to c...

Re: Making pre's out of a mixer.
Wow, Interesting situation... I can see two different ways to look at this.. First, If the board is giving you a sound you really, really love, don't #u(k!ng screw with it!!!.. The sound of a board has as much to do with the mix amplifiers and everything else in the signal path, as do the mic preamp...

Re: Cheap preamps and self-delusion...
Al, I didn't mean to sound like I didn't like my Trackmaster... As a matter of fact, it's the first one I plug into... I was just surprised when I first plugged it in at home, that compared to the other inexpensive pre's that I use, the TM's basic un-EQ'd sound doesn't have the same amount of top en...

Re: Cheap preamps and self-delusion...
Because of the "personal taste" aspect of what we do, the theory that your system will only be as good as it's weakest link doesn't always hold true... Thank God for that!!.. For the most part though, it seems that many of the bargain basement mic pre's, especially the starved plate 12AX7 types, can...

Just a mutant PC, 1ghz P3, 512meg, 60 & 40 gig HD's, Delta 44 & AP2496 for eight track recording using an outboard AD converter & six out ( No spdif to audio converter) ALSO A cherry Tascam 234 cassette four track which gets used for location recording and as an analog generation for computer based ...

In a dirty cardboard box at a yard sale.. 2 Electrovoice RE15's, an RE635, a 666, and a DS35...This along with a few mic cords, a continuity tester, and a couple of Shure bal/unbal adapters.. $25 bucks.. I still have and use all but the 666 and the 635 which were lost somewhere along the way..D

Battery Backup... What the hell was I thinking
This last weekend I came within thirty seconds of disaster... I had just finished recording tracks to send to a friend for approval.. The computer had spun down the drives and I was just playing piano through the sound cards when we had a power failure... All the lights in the house went dim.. My Vo...

Re: What do you guys use to clean your rubbers? (rubber roll
liquid freon... Studer A820's But only when the rollers look really, really cruddy... We transfer a lot of older tapes to digital for archiving... they like to shed emulsion.. This causes build up of shmootz on everything... Been using this stuff for fifteen years and we're still using the same roll...

Re: ANYTHING BEHRINGER - yeah it's cheap, but we all use it.
Although I haven?t ruled out buying more Behringer gear, I'm a little pissed at them right now... I bought one of their effects boxes, a Virtualizer something or other... I just wanted something for adding a little verb to my monitors during recording.. The thing sounded ok, better than the Peavey a...

Re: any PC software comparable to protools/digi. performer?
I have nothing bad to say about any of the other programs mentioned.. I would probably be using one or more of them if I hadn?t tried N-Track... For the money, if your main goal is to record yourself or your friends, not to get studio clients, you just cannot beat the bang for the buck.. I downloade...

Re: low to mid priced mic pre
When and if you get the chance to audition a Focusrite Trak Master against something like the JoeMeek pre's... You're going to get the initial impression that the Meeks are much brighter and better sounding than the FR.... With mine, it was'nt until I had a really over the top vocal that I realised ...

Re: Why is this happening to me??? (60 cycle hum?)
You should first try to eliminate as much of the grounding problem as you can through re-arranging things, checking your AC, and doing all the conventional techniques... If you still have hum, you can get an isolation transformer like an EBTECH hum eliminator... About $60 bucks at any of the larger ...

EV's DS35. RE666, Sennheiser Md 211?? small dynamics.. I'm not sure of the model number but I have a consecutivly numbered set... Cool for overheads......and a couple of teeny Isomax Hypercardioid Lav's that are also great for sticking in and around a drumset...Dean
