Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Just picked up a pair of Tannoy PBM 6.5 speakers. First listen seems pretty good! I LOVES me my PBM 6.5's! Kinda opposite of NS-10's. Gotta make sure it's shiny on top,and bassy on bottom, then it's good. LOVE THEM! I have 2 pair, and a pair of the PBM 8's,which are very cool, but need a bigger room,a...

Re: References in mixing
And of course I know everything's gonna get mangled/caressed in mastering,I just prefer getting as close as I can, without crushing the crap out of anything before it gets sent of to the Mangler in Charge.

Beatles-Paperback Writer, Mostly And Your Bird Can sing, Then Melvins Lizzy (for 400-500 hz), 2nd Cypress Hill for Sub/Kick problems, 1st PIL album for Ambience/kick/snare balance. Anything by The Meters to gauge kick/snare and ambience. I guess these for the most part share a concern for midrange i...

Re: How important is it to mic the bottom of a snare?
+1000% on the Beyer M88. Hands down, fave mic ever made. Works on everything. I still have 2 old ones that work,2 others have perished mid-take in the last 15 years. I love the M69 almost as much, but they're nowhere to be found. I've yet to find a Beyer microphone that disappoints. Wish i could find ...

Re: How important is it to mic the bottom of a snare?
I do a beta 56 on top,and a sm98 underneath. I have an old Slingerland Krupa chrome over brass (the deeper one),and track and sum together flat with a soundcraft 200b into 1 track on interface. 80% top,20% bottom. A little goes a long way. Also use PZM's on floor under snare, and floor tom on seperat...

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me
I love my EH Soul Food,it can go from nice to kookoo (I prefer the latter). The Malekko B:assmaster is a piece of magick (fuzz/overdrive,and a bunch of octave/filtering options) Sounds great on guitar, and RULES on Bass. The Malekko Helium is a fuzz/octave combo that rules my world, can be dialed in s...

Re: What do you hear in this vocal?
Tube mic/Ribbon singing quiet, too close to the diaphragm-you can hear it folding. Tone is nice, minus the folding thing. Dry. I love dry. Sounds like something hit front end of input a tiny bit too hard. Maybe it was tweaked to sound that way. Dunno. Tiny bit less "folding" ,and a little bit more air...

Re: RIP Eddie Van Halen
I feel sad for Alex too. I don't think he's ever been in a band without Eddie! And when you heard both of them (or either of them) you always knew exactly who it was. I think its awesome Eddie started off on drums, but gave them to Alex, cause he wanted them more. Then started up with the stringed th...

Re: Polarity Flip as Net Positive?
Fun with Polarity/comb filtering/phase cancellation! Yes! Cool thing I stole from Beinhorn/Chris Shaw. Loud JCM 800 100 watt with a Telecaster. 4 mic's close mic'd and blended (Through a BBE 822?) A 414 between 6-12 feet out, polarity flipped. Had me move the mic closer /farther until the very thin t...

Re: I'm Doing All My Own Backing Vocals
How can I make it sound less like me singing along with myself using only analogue techniques? Yep, done this many times. Just mimic various singers on the different tracks . . most of us singers have a few favorites that we can mimic. And it's fun too. HELL YESS! Gotta do the dance/moves,as well. ...
