Re: Simple problem, simple solution right?
I switched the leads on one end of a shielded cable thinking that would reverse the phase... Nothing no sound what so ever. This sounds familiar to a head-scratching patch cable episode I got into last year. I wanted to make a polarity-reversed TRS patch cord to patch mics into balanced inputs on a...

Re: Your favorite recorded guitar part ever?
Anyone ever go thru a King Crimson phase? Fripp's guitar(s) at the end of "sailor's tale" on Islands... whoosh! indescribable. unless you're this writer: In terms of harmonic support there is a transformation: the riff is, at one point, transposed to D, and D becomes important at the end. At the cli...

Re: any info on DIY mic preamps would be appreciated...
http://nanaimo.ark.com/~pat/kit.htm#JFET Pat Morford sells a high end 2ch preamp kit for $500 that seems attractive. It uses nifty Millenia gain modules and custom input transformers, and I can't say I haven't been tempted to put one together. It's a bare bones kit, so you add a power supply, switc...

Whoa! Can you imagine the sound of a live roach stuck in your ear?Rec Head wrote:I had a patient with a roach in his ear. All I could see was the roach's ass and 2 legs ---- moving. Fucking gross. I wonder if the roach ate the earwax.

Re: What does Redbook mean?
I guess the mystery still stands. Could taking a CD from our error-prone realtime burner, ripping it, then re-burning it on a PC actually REDUCE the error rate? :( Maybe there were errors in the TOC... when the HHB finalizes a CD it does some weird 4-minute long scanning trick. I suppose its measuri...

Re: What does Redbook mean?
Also, the CD may have been rejected because the error rate was too high. Come to think of it, our HHB burner is a high-traffic item and has burned literally thousands of CDs. Maybe it's going out of alignment?? One of my PCs won't recognize the CDs it burns. Hmmmm............ I think you've nailed ...

Re: New P/T Tremelo Trick
buy a crappy stereo drum machine off of ebay for 40 bucks and program whatever back and forth rhythm pleases you, and use this machine into the sidechain/ key inputs of a regular analoge gate unit. if ya search good enoughyou could prolly get both for under 150 total. the Valley People Dyna-mite pr...

Re: Help me master
I use Logic Gold 4.8.1... I like Logic's AUDIO ENERGIZER. It's not a real-time process, but it works like a limiter. Presumably it gives less distortion by not running in real time? Anyway, it has attack and release settings. I've stuck with the stock settings, 5ms attack and 10ms release, and I've ...

What does Redbook mean?
So I was helping prepare a disc for a run of 1,000 copies. It was rejected twice by the manufacturer because it didn't conform to 'redbook specs'. I then looked online and found the original redbook document. Yay, now I can do it right! Wrong... Dissapointingly, it turned out to be 50 pages of insan...

Re: what is the future of recording?
The future of recording? in 100 years? You'll be able to go to the doctor and get some XLR I/O jacks installed on your head. You want 6 channels out? Sheesh... if you think you can handle it... That would remove the technical barriers to recorded compositions. Isn't that partly why we use computers,...

Re: Analog Reverb???
Thanks for de-mystifying the reverb tank... I'm not clear on how to send audio into it, though. Can you feed the input with an ordinary +4 dB signal from a mixer's aux send?

Re: Mic'ing a Bass with a Condensor
You can also fix your problem ... by simply delaying the close microphone so that it is coherent with the further mic. If recording analog, and you have an accurate digital delay, you can simply run out of the mic-pre your close mic is plugged into, and run it into your delay box. Set the appropria...

Re: Hating "affordable" monitors....
I bought some used Event PS8's. The first thing that surprised me was the weird whistling noise that came out of the speaker cabinets, in time with low bass notes. I had to use electrical tape to seal the air leaks through the electronics module in the back! The manufacturer claimed that thi...
