Check out this recording studio footage from the band Summer Twins. If you look closely, you'll notice an "old friend".

LOTS of Quantegy/RMGI 456/457 1/4" tape reels

I'm getting rid of my tape stuff. I've got a bunch of RMGI SM911 34111 (456 equivalent) and Quantegy 457 for sale. All reels have 2-3 passes and are in excellent condition. They are on 7" plastic reels. RMGI and Quantegy reels are $10/ea plus shipping. $5/ea for the off-brand/funky reels. PM if you'...

You need the Voxengo latency delay plugin. I run my tape machine into my Firepod with the latency delay plugin over the inputs. Set the delay compensation for the time it takes an audio signal to go from sound card output (or mixer direct out) --> tape machine --> sound card input and it will automa...

Tascam 38 w/extras in Bloomington, Indiana

Hi all, I'm putting my Tascam 38 1/2" 8 track reel to reel for sale. It includes 4 blank (3 sealed and unopened) reels of new RMGI 911 tape, remote, 8ch RCA to 1/4" snake, and take-up reel. The #8 VU meter doesn't work. I was told the machine was recently serviced when I bought it, but you know how ...

Tascam 38 noise on fresh tape

I just picked up a Tascam 38 and it's generating a ton of noise when playing a fresh (0 pass) RMGI SM911 reel through the repro head. Once I record onto the tape, it sounds fine. I have a 1/4" 4-track Tascam deck that I've used for years and never had this happen. I know I have the reel loaded corre...

Unfortunately I'm going to need a new laptop regardless. My Dell is maxed out at 512MB RAM and only has a 30GB HD!

Laptop/mobile recording advice

Ok guys, I need a little advice on location recording and laptop interfaces. Right now I have a desktop with a Delta 1010 and an older laptop (1.6ghz, 512mb RAM) with a Tascam US122 USB interface. I'm using a Hill Multimix for pres. I want to get an 8in/8out card that I can use with a laptop and, de...

I do this all the time and see no reason against it. I love mono drums with a room mic.

I always start with the OH mics, then add BD and snare. Then I'll blend a room mic if I want. I tend to always work this way: start with the mic(s) that will be most prominent in the mix.

Topic: Tascam 38 or 388 owners - what's required for maintenance?

Since these machines are 20+ years old, I'd say it will depend on each individual machine you look at whether it's been abused or maintained throughout its life. Tape cost and tape speed are probably more important (remember the 38 runs at twice the speed of a 388) and will determine how much money ...

Yeah, listen to the Anthology version if you can. It's much more stripped down with no echo and you can clearly hear John clapping and saying "shoot me." I heard he was pissed because Paul's bass note totally overpowered "me" so it sounds like he only says "shoot" :D
