Ahhhh, the "disco-ballad". 70's rockers never seemed to be able to admit when they were playing disco....

Yes, definitely Sn + Tom together. A personal favorite when playing with a rhodes/wurli slow-jam

I think it's pretty safe to say that the vast majority of people on the TOMB (obviously including myself) have gone through a period where they dwell on "what I need to get in order to improve my recordings". I personally get into phases like that every couple of years, which end up with me spending...

Assuming yours is like mine, the 1/4" outs are effect sends, which would mean (to my logic, NOT based on definitive knowledge) that they are taking the signal direct from the individual tracks, maybe even pre-eq (though I don't really know), where as the rca tape outs are taking the signal from buss...

Last night, I was bottle feeding my 4-week-old son, and he spit up a ton of milk all over my pants and the rocking chair cushion. Lovely. Then at his next feeding, he had a major blowout out the side of his diaper, so I ended up with major poop on my sweater and on the same pants I already mentione...

Can you use it for subtle things too or is the noise just too much for things like vocals, acoustics, etc.? I've only used it successfully on vocals that were really forceful, NOT the delicate type, and haven't felt like I could get it to a useful place on delicate sounding guitars and such. I don'...

I've had a pair for about 6 years as well. I got them thinking they would be nice as a stereo bus limiter, but rarely use them as such. Agreed on the slightly noisy side. I tend to use one as my squash-the-drum-"room"-mic device. For years, my stock Octava 319 stuck into and facing the upper corner ...

Totally agree. And Tascam is by no means alone in this. That's why I think the retailer should be the first call on something like this, not the manufacturer. This is actually one of the FEW reasons I still order shit from Sweetwater. Besides the random annoying calls, "...just checking to see if t...

embrace the hell outta that bleed! -mike +1 also +1 on crow's suggestion about the blanket. What about AEA r92 on the vocals? It'll pick up some piano as well, most likely, but piano bleed is going to be the least of your problems. What you've got to worry about (though it's unavoidable) is the dru...

Holy shit... I just spent, like 1/2 hour, writing about a recent experience where I got 25% publishing on songs I produced (including arrangements), on spec, for a singer/songwriter, ONLY TO HAVE BEEN TIMED OUT FROM MY TOMB LOGIN STATUS AND MY WHOLE THING DISAPPEARED!!! aaarrrrggghhhh!!! I'm not rew...

Now, the best BASS SOUND FOR ACTUAL USE IN A MIX that I ever heard (that I was using myself, that is), hands down, came from a well placed RE20. I'll go for the RE20 on upright anytime. On the f-hole or the bridge? Usually pretty close to the F hole, but not right on it. By "well placed" I meant si...

I've recorded and mixed a bunch of upright in the past. In my experience, the best BASS SOUNDS, ON THEIR OWN came from a 2 mic setup involving usually involving a u87 down low and a nice SDC at the fingerboard. Now, the best BASS SOUND FOR ACTUAL USE IN A MIX that I ever heard (that I was using myse...

Oh hell, I might as well jump in.... These are records that I can think of that really changed the way I think about recorded music. I use all of them as a reference on how I want music to sound. In no particular order. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot ... just artfully done. Beatles - Revolver ... the ...

I switched to Logic 8 from DP5 about 6 months ago. The ONLY thing I miss about DP is how crazily easy it was to edit audio tracks. Moving them around, combining them, crossfades, strecthing, etc... I felt like a damn miracle worker with how fast I was able to comp tracks and "fix" shit. Logic's stil...

This might be a terrible idea, but it's something I've done with some success in similar situations.

Put a soft-edged gate on, PRE compression, to get rid of the noise between vocal phrases. It's definitely a very specific effect, but not altogether unmusical.
