in my opinion, the only good reason to record the instruments separately is if they are having performance trouble. it can be more efficient to give each individual person a few shots at playing it right than waiting for them all to play it right at the same time. but if they all seem to beplaying w...

here's one idea: put the cello in the middle, violin and viola on either side. put the ADK 2-3 feet in front of the cello at about bridge height. put the AKG right above the ADK, maybe 6 feet off the ground, aiming down (in omni, if that mic has omni). this way both mics are roughly the same distanc...

from the MA site: "Modular Acoustic panels are ... constructed of rigid insulation without any membrane giving better broadband absorption than other membrane-based absorbers." This is interesting because membranes are often used to provide more low-frequency absorption than rigid fiberglass can. I ...

just to beat this thing into the ground... if you double the sound energy present in a room, say by turning on two loudspeakers instead of one, the level goes up by 3dB. sound level (in decibels) = 10*log(energy) if the sound energy of a guitar rocking out full strength in the left speaker is, say, ...

Re: Big cavernous live room treatment (with pictures)

I think you would ideally want bass traps in a room like that.. not necessarily. the room looks quite large in the picture, so you aren't likely to have the ugly bass problems that smaller rooms do. the main thing i'd watch for is those two big bare parallel walls: you may have some flutter problem...

Re: Before heading in to record...

A very good tech 'round these parts charges about $70 for a setup. This mainly consists of neck alignment, bridge adjustment, intonation, but would probably also include any random tweaks that need to be made that don't require new parts or loads of hours, like fixing a ground hum or something like ...

Re: Mic Locker Next addition?

if it were me i'd want another flavor for vocals. in my experience, 414s are great all purpose mics for instruments, but are more like special purpose mics for vocals.

Re: Studio Flooring Question

Lowlight, I checked out the link you provided. It's to a company that makes stuff for boats, to keep engine noise from coming up through the floor and stuff. Are you sure this is what the landlord wants to put on your floor? It would be a very weird choice, unless he has it lying around or something...

Did you figure out why the monitors sends sounded so much better than the directs? was it just plain gain-staging? care to speculate for us?

Re: Omni Phase and Confusion

Does the omni pattern make these mics respond to phase issues differntly than other directional mics? No. Phase issues (as relate to multi-micing) are all about distance of the different mics to the source. Directional pattern has nothing to do with it. That said, some directional mics have a funky...

do you have a mackie board or similar lying around? anything with 1/4" inputs that feed mic preamps. just to check if it works and sounds good enough to bother investigating further.

Re: What would you do?: 8 Piece, 2 Drummers, 5 Amps, Etc: Li

my imagination may be sadly limited, but i can't imagine this not being a total clusterfuck, mud city. any chance you could put the amps in another room, maybe with blankets over them, put the electric players in the control room, etc..? or maybe just put the non-amped players in the control room. i...

what room will they be in and how big is it? Will they be on stage performing, or is this "live in the studio"?

And who the heck is that band? Sounds interesting.

cool edit is not made anymore. gone, finished. technically, adobe owns it, but they've just gutted it and renovated it into their program called audition, which costs a lot. i can't imagine that they thought the same people who downloaded cool edit for free would then buy audition. no, they bought (...

What did you do exactly? I've never heard of this processor. I have a G4 myself that i'd probably want to upgrade sooner or later. Tell me more please.
