Re: kinda embarrasing question
If you're not happy with the results you get, there's a freeware program called CDEX that I use as an interface for the lame encoder. The lame encoder I think gives better results than most, I find noticably fewer artifacts and better reproduction, especially using VBR.

Re: Messageboard Comp... best songs
i'd happily host a bittorrent, but I'm at the end of a distribution tree, and I'm moving this weekend and won't have a broadband connection set up for about a week. So I guess this was a pointless post, sorry. But hosting a bittorrent would be a good way to share the compilation while spreading the ...

Re: need bush samples
What he said, there are weekly radio addresses on whitehouse.gove: http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/radio/
These are in real audio, so you may need Virtual Audio Cable or something similar to use them.

Re: MOTU 828 and PC
i'm using an 828 mki on an athlon 2800 winxp, works pretty well. Using samplitude I occasionally need to restart when using the ASIO drivers (not a crash, but the sound output stops), but the MME drivers are more solid. This may be a Samplitude problem, their ASIO interface isn't as mature as some o...

Re: How do you like Annapolis / DC area?
Annapolis is about 45 minutes from downtown DC or Baltimore, outside of rush hour. Rush hour would probably be another 30 minutes into DC. It's not so unusual to go from Annapolis to DC or Baltimore to go out. There's not too much to do in Annapolis for music, though there are some good places to ea...

Re: looking for a good acoustic guitar mic
I love a pair of small condensers in xy setup, about 18 inches back. if I want a little more low end I'll either move closer or add a feed from the guitar's built-in pickup & use a lowpass filter on it.

Re: How do you like Annapolis / DC area?
well, I was transplanted to Baltimore a few years ago from nyc, following my wife as well, & I've been working in DC since then. I'm moving inside the capitol beltway next month. There seems to be lots of different things going on here, lots of post-punk, some instrumental things (verbal is one band...

Re: ever feel a little amorous toward your favorite mic?
Man, you guys are making me regret the used mics I just got. What if this re-20 was previously used by G.G. Allin? I'm gonna take it to the pro audio clinic just in case.

Re: Holy Shit!
yeah, what I thought would be a few minor upgrades ended up being a several thousand dollar spending spree, and I've only worked on 2 projects in the last year.
I need to get a few more projects so I can justify spending more money.

Re: cool but cheap cd packaging ideas
thanks for the tips. I think that the stamp is a great idea for the spine, I was worried about trying to line up a stencil, let alone create one, for that. And I may have an in at a t-shirt shop, so getting a silkscreen made cheap shouldn't be too hard. I think hand-made is the way to go. It would b...

cool but cheap cd packaging ideas
ok, so my band is polishing up our first serious attempt at a demo, and we're trying to think of some packaging ideas that would be cheap yet cool and attention getting. Right now I'm leaning towards buying some blank digipaks from www.discmarket.com and using spraypaint & stencils for the outside &...

Re: Finding the weak link: mic vs. pre
As someone who's done a lot of bedroom recordings where the vocal sound is the weakest link, I'd suggest taking the room you're recording under consideration. If you've got alot of not-nice echos and phase problems where you're recording, try moving to another room, another part of the room, etc. Th...

Re: Oktava ML52 mods-
how difficult is replacing the transformer? I've done enough soldering to fix a cord or guitar electronics, but not anything more complicated.
I've told myself that I'd wait until my warranty runs out to play around with a mod on my ml52, but I may not be that patient.

Re: Groove Tubes GT57 mics?
Well I did just some quick testing of the md1b-FET (yes this is the one that Musician's Friend is clearing out at $150 right now) using just the pre's in my MOTU 828. I was comparing it to my NT2, my only othe ld condenser, which I've never been crazy about for male vocals. My immediate reaction was...

Re: Groove Tubes GT57 mics?
you're right, I think their mic line is something like:
55-FET, cardiod
57-FET, multipattern
66-tube, cardoid
67-tube, multipattern
I actually just got in today the md1b-FET, which as far as I can tell is the 55 without the pad & roll-off or the disc resonator. I'll try it out tonight & report back.
