Unless you are recording in your bedroom, reamping is a a waste. Really? I guess that my experience, being the opposite, is completely wrong. I haven't let the lack of a proper live room discourage me from the possibility of making great recordings. Since I cannot afford to own a decent space or bu...

Am I crazy for considering keeping my day job? My partner would most likely keep his as well. We'll need the pension/benefits/salary!! -Ken I don't think you are crazy at all. I took a full time salaried position in November and so far things have been great. Mind you the day job is very laid back,...

OK, here's a dumb question... how should I go about reamping if I only have a soundcard with a -10 unbalanced RCA connection? I mean short of buying a new interface or a mixer with XLR outs? recommend either buying or making a RCA=>1/4 cable of some sort. I've got that, but it's sitll line level go...

Do you have any sort of mixer at all? I'm guessing no based on the question but if you do just use a 1/4 dir...

Preamp for Voiceover Work
I hate these posts but I have never done voiceover work before and was asked for some advice. I don't have a budget yet so if you could give me a couple of recommendations in various price categories it would be much appreciated. Most of the work will be for various film projects done in ProTools. T...

from wikipedia Playing back a signal from recording studio equipment directly into a guitar amplifier can cause unwanted side-effects such as input-stage distortion, treble loss or overemphasis, and ground-loop hum; thus there is sometimes a need for impedance conversion, level-matching, and ground...

Re: Silly Question
This will probably get laughed at, but I have to ask. While recording some acoustic guitar last night, I found myself wondering "Why am I mic'ing the guitar from the front and perpedicular w/ a mono mic if I'm hearing it from the top and parallel with stereo ears?" I would have left it at that, but...

The answer is, it depends. There are certainly differences between the two but one approach is not always better than the other. Why not on your next session, mic up the drums including a mic underneath the snare and record them to two seperate tracks. Then go back and reamp the snare using just the...

Another relatively common use of a side chain is the "keyed gate." It's much the opposite of the "ducker." Run a guitar signal into the main input of a noise gate or expander with a side chain (rarely called "key") input. Run a percussive type of sound, say a submix of the kick and snare, into the ...

A similar question: what precautions should you take with tube gear and temperatures? If you think about it, tubes and point-to-point wiring are more able to withstand temperature changes than are transistors and printed circuit boards, as expansion and contraction can not have as much of an effect...

I'll admit, overall I don't love the bassman for bass but with that said, I think if you are looking for one single cab to do both bass and guitar you will be making a compromise. I have a matching piggyback 2x12 bassman cab which came with brown oxfords which I replaced with some Weber's. It's one ...
