Re: Sorry...
I am wrestling with the same thing right now recording my own band. I am so used to editing and mixing on my DAW (like a word processor) vs. mixing from tape (typewriter). What has us bouncing drums and tracking instruments on the Otari 8 track seems to boil down to this: It is so much quicker. That...

Re: RIP Darrel "Dimebag" Abbot
What really sucks is that Lennon and Dimebag are joined by so many others, every day. I have been shot at while minding my own business MORE THAN ONCE, and not in Detriot either, in rural Ohio and in South Carolina. I have had cops point guns at me as well - that I can understand, why wouldn't they ...

Re: Using instrument cable for speaker connections
I have had it explained to me (I think by Kevin Science, who used to fix my amps) that the capacitance is caused by the fact that a shielded cable IS a capacitor physically. Short runs at lower power probably don't matter too much but at a KW or so (my house PA runs lots of KW lines) you are looking...

Re: help with ground lift
I hate that about Baggs - we have one where I do FOH and I never break it out anymore, especially after the Cello Humfest '04. Also I kinda like how passive DI's seem to soften the extreme trebly grossness of most acoustic pickups. Usually it sounds ok through the PA mains but in the cans.... :kotzen:

Re: Ampeg guitar amp - worth $200?
Have you noticed that everyone on Harmony likes everything they review? (almost anyway) As an old ampeg freak I say Balls to anything made under their brand after 1978 or so except repros of old designs like SVTs. I did have a Crate (St. Louis Music) SVT and it worked great forever and sold for very...

Re: Mystery Amp?Any Guesses?
Beard, Caldo I have the YBA-IIa bassmaster, the one that runs 90 watts on two 6CA7s (El-34s) - Those things are great amps. for fun: Jumper the inputs (or y-cable) - sounds nice that way "Low range expander" is midrange "Hi Range Expander" is presence The bright channel has (in my opinion) way too b...

Re: Good electronics surplus stores in Seattle area?
sadly Radar is gone. I don't know if any of ya'll know Kevin Science, but I really liked it when he worked there. Boing Surplus is sometimes good for rack enclosures and odball test equipment - other than that, I don't know what else has good DIY-oriented salvage in Seattle, seems kinda picked-out a...

Re: Music Man!
I played for 8 years in a band where the guitare player used the 212 - great amp, loud as hell.
I did sound for Chris Kirkwood's new band "Volcano" a few months back and he uses the 210-130

Re: What amp should I use with a synth?
If you have wedges already, drive them with as nice and powerful a bass amp head as you can lay your hands on. I have used a 70's SS Ampeg for this with great results. A small guitar amp will not do it unless the band is really quiet. Low freqs can kill amps like this pretty easily. If that is all y...

Re: diy mastering for live backing tracks
I am going to weigh in on the FOH guy's perspective here! Personally, I would prefer a drums stem and an instruments stem - one reason is that if the tracks are mixed light in the bottom it can be very hard to get sufficient drum impact (if you are playing on bills with live drummers you will want y...

Hee hee RTFM!!! - sorry wedge!
Seriously though - try the input mode for metering when setting levels roughly - if that works I suppose striping a bit of tape and checking your playback levels would be more accurate.
Is your machine a Mark III?

Re: ? for Otari 5050 8 track users
Put the deck in "Input" and look for signal then. Mine doesn't show level in record until it is running. There is also a switch option on the back of the deck that allows "standby" metering. Do you have the manual?

Re: Any recommendations on surviving live sound?
so one more bit: I have never told anyone to turn down. They won't anyway. Smart bands know what to do and sound great, dumb ones...well sheeit. If I have a rapport with a band they may even ask me "Is that too loud?" - believe me, if they ask they aren't. I used to ask sound guys that all the time ...

Re: Any recommendations on surviving live sound?
hey thedeepcuts - I have been doing live FOH for about half a year to supplement my day jobs pay and to get out into the music world to make contacts and meet people. Oh yeah, and to work in audio. I have a home studio and mostly record my own band's demos, comp cuts and such. I've had a few clients...
