Re: Product review: Breathe Right Strips
So this related to sleep apnea pretty strictly - I had it bad for years. It is really not good for you. My 10 yr girlfriend told me I would stop breathing for 30 - 40 seconds at a time. I finally broke down and schlepped up to Canada and had my uvula and part of my soft palette lasered off. So this ...

Re: Passive vs. Acitve Monitors
Passives - because a good amp can be used with better speakers in future or multiple sets now. I kind doubt the average active has amps that can match the quality of my Expensivwerks 2100s....

Re: Live Recording
I would not worry too much about the FOH outs unless you have good reason to be - like the board is ragged, the soundman obviously on PCP, etc.. If the 2-mix isn't sending lethal signnals to the Club's amps them why would it be sending them to your recorder? There may be quite a bit I don't know her...

Re: The Fiery Furnaces
Koki - It might help - at least it will sound different! You could certainly use the amp as a bandpass filter, meaning; the speaker won't replicate the highest or lowest freq.s and harmonics the synth puts out. I find the part of the specific digital synths I have worked with that bothers me most is...

Re: The Fiery Furnaces
on the edge of this topic - Just now integrating a Korg MS2000 into my band's setup (played by the bassist/singer) Running it through a couple of nice analog stages before hitting the board helps a lot (Moogerfooger LPF, old Traynor class A guitar amp w/sprng verb, mic'ed) When recording my old band...

Re: Mic'ing that Wurlitzer...
ahh - love the wurly! I've micd a 200's internal speakers with a SDC of some kind, which worked really well in a 4-track world of my past. BTW as far as amps - my girlfriends Traynor Guitarmate (an Vox AC 15 top-boost clone) KILLS on keyboards af all kinds: wurly, Rhodes, transistor organs, and ever...

Re: Metronome kil'd the radio star??
So the last band I recorded, a new style folk/bluegrass trio, was adamant about using clicks but I'm not sure it was always the best thing for their session. It seemed like they were all chasing the click at times. Lack of practice, sure. Another time a noisy new-wave type band with a great drummer ...

Re: Marshall 100 watt to Class A
I second the Weber MASS - I have the 100 watt version for my Traynor YBA2A (90 watt, 2 el34s) and it does great taking this very loud, non master vol plexi-type amp down to useable level. By this I still mean a wear 15 db fitted earplugs and play with a loud drummer sort of useable. I still really n...

Re: live sound dilemma - cello in rock act
As a club FOH guy I weigh in on the pickup/amp tip. I deal with strings pretty often (oddly) in rock settings and micing does not work well at all on a small stage with drums, loud guitar amps and loud vocal monitors. Any decently powerful modern bass or keyboard amp should work and insure that the ...

Re: jbl 4312 monitors...
The drummer for my band just has some JBLs foisted on him. Thet are meant to be soffit-mounted but they have been rigged into MDF cabinets about 4' tall. They have 2 15"s, a cone shaped mid-hi horn with a diffusor and a weird tweet with a clear lucite or plexiglass wedge-shaped piece poking out. We ...

Re: The New Cure album
F****ng Jazz Chorus! I mixed one live in last weekend being used by the second guitar player with Curt Kirkwood's new band Volcano - the player was really good but after 2 songs I had that channel 's high shelf at -8db AND IT WAS STILL NUT-CUTTINGLY BRIGHT! EDIT (I guess I should have been cutting 5...

Re: Dr. Moog, I love you!
How dow you use it? I get keying a gate with the kick to let through hits of low self-osc. Any other good tricks? I have been using mine (self osc. mode) lately for ugly ambient stuff and am toying with fun new uses. To me it isn't much fun with stringed instruments, oddly.

Re: the transition from recorded sound, to live sound??? hel
Scodiddly hit one there! As house some nights my job is to make sure the touring engineer doesn't light the subwoofers on fire (happened). I meet a number of touring guys that range from great, and from whom I can learn fun and useful things, to dumb and lazy jackasses that do poor mixes. The space ...
