Re: There's another midwestern transplant in Brooklyn
That's funny. I grew up in Raleigh. I moved to Brooklyn earlier this year. It was cool at first and then it slowly kicked in: Waiting 30 minutes for the train late nights and weekends. Walking three blocks with a heavy sack of laundry every week. $5 for a bottle of Budweiser. Astronomical rent price...

Re: RAY (the Ray Charles movie)
This movie is great to see in a theatre with a decent sound system. And the one thing that stuck out to me is how incredible the recordings from the 50s and early 60s sounded, for example, to the more recent re-recording of 'georgia' during the credit roll. One set of recordings has this magic quali...

That's an older 4-track tape recorder from the 80s. It's just like the Tascam Porta 01, 02, or 414, 424 models that you might've run across in audio stores. I've always found that particular model to be pretty cool looking. If it functions properly it's probably worth about $20 to $40. You're gonna ...

leaving gear on vs. turning it off occasionally
Is there a consensus here? Before I got into recording I guess I always assumed that the less wear you put on a piece of gear, the longer it would last. Studios will leave their gear on all the time, overnight, etc. until it dies or they get rid of it. And I've also read that some engineers will fre...

Re: 12v phantom power
When you give an older german condenser mic 48V and it sounds like there's no frequencies below 4kHz, it could be that it needs 12V instead.

a white friend of mine is dating an asian girl and he doesn't have glasses. And she suggested they go as John & Yoko for halloween, but they couldn't get their act together in time. I also knew an asian guy who was seeing a white girl and he wore contacts. Getting back to the topic, I'm thinking of ...

Re: Bush, champion of secularism in the world
I think this article and this thread do an excellent job of illustrating the cognitive differences between Bush supporters and their opponents. The issue boils down to whether or not your brain can see nuance beyond black and white. I would say a great majority of the population simply cannot. Once ...
