Re: must-read rant

Arrogant? You wanna talk about us Northeasterners being fucking arrogant? What's more American than arrogance? Hmmm? Maybe horsies? I don't think so.

Re: Bush, champion of secularism in the world

Only one faction in American politics has found itself able to make excuses for the kind of religious fanaticism that immediately menaces us in the here and now. Hitch is, unfortunately, just perpetuating the same silly logic that's dominated the mainstream thought in this country for the last litt...

Re: Bush, champion of secularism in the world

conservatives are up to their usual brilliant tricks again, flipping this one around and claiming that the liberals are bullying the Christian right. Gimme a break. The only people able to be elected president in this country are white Christian males. That's right. White Christian males. Can you be...

Re: American Centrist Party to the rescue?

Cripes, dude. Cripes. So your idea of tolerance to cultures is to eliminate differences? Rad. Your thinking blows my f-ing mind. Seriously. I'm blown. That plan was a joke. But I'm also not clear on how having people of different ideologies, lifestyles and cultures living closer together would "eli...

Re: Why Bush won? (for a paper-- please help!)

He didn't win with the 'moral value' card, though. 1. Exit polls from 1992-2000 show that 'moral values' actually scored higher than it did this year. 2. Nationwide, Bush's popular vote total increased by 3%.The states with anti-gay marriage initiatives on the ballot also drew 3% this year on averag...

Re: American Centrist Party to the rescue?

This proposed party is just the democratic platform with a different name slapped on. Karl Rove will have 1 person show up on Fox News saying that the ACP is more liberal than the democratic party and it will instantly be de-legitimized. Changing names around doesn't change the make-up of the countr...

Re: The "moral values" myth

I'm embarrassed to be a liberal sometimes because of our insularity. At our worst, we're as tolerant as Nazis. We have our own version of myopia. Our idea of open-mindedness extends to buying a few world music cds and asking getting mad when people insist that gay people weren't born that way. Our ...

Re: The "moral values" myth

But the same insularity that caused many liberals to lose touch with the rest of the country now causes them to simplify, misunderstand and condescend to the people who voted for Bush. If you want to understand why Democrats keep losing elections, just listen to some coastal and university town lib...

How quickly the thugs silenced the opposition

Republican Sen. Arlen Specter just yesterday reminding people of the importance of checks and balances: ?The president is well aware of what happened, when a number of his nominees were sent up, with the filibuster,? Specter added, referring to Senate Democrats? success over the past four years in b...

Re: Anyone here want to leave the country? (or lives in anot

I just read Maureen Dowd's column in the NYTimes ( http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/04/opinion/04dowd.html ) which had this paragraph: Tom Coburn, the new senator from Oklahoma, has advocated the death penalty for doctors who perform abortions and warned that "the gay agenda" would undermine the count...

Re: Edwards in 2008

McCain's had cancer and he would be over 70 in 2008. It's hard to imagine that he would try to run. But all the lying and stumping he did for Bush this year makes me wonder what he's got in mind.

The dems should try to get jon stewart to run. why not. it's already over anyway.

Re: Edwards in 2008

Edwards, as a smooth-talking southern christian, has to be seen as the best candidate. But, like wing said, he has very little experience. Relinquishing his senate seat was a major tactical mistake. He could try to run for something in '06, and wait it out till the '12 presidential race. He would be...

I've really been feeling down about the situation this country is in all morning...

But then you linked to that picture of Paris & Nicole and I am reminded of why America is such a great place to live. Thank you.
