Don't stop to eat. Take an energy bar or something in there with you. Be sure you guys practice together without vocals. This is key. If you're going to bash out all your songs in a few hours, you have to know the changes without hearing vocal cues. If that doesn't work for you, ask the engineer in ...

My version of "The Old Master Painter" still needs a guitar track and mixing, but everything else (drums, keys, vox, ukelele, etc.) is done. I know today's the deadline, but I'm going to be a couple days late. Sorry. I will get the damn thing finished!

This thread, and that awesome Natas Kaupas clip with firehose's "Brave Captain," reminds me how many great bands I discovered through skate videos. Most of the mid- to late-90s videos had rap soundtracks, and most of this decade's videos use vintage metal, but the 80s stuff, when I was starting skat...

After much hemming and hawing about this, I've decided that my New Year's resolution is to contribue "The Old Master Painter" to the TOMB Beach Boys comp. All one minute, six seconds of it.

So how many songs is that now?

If anyone were to make a new "Best Of" the TOMB, that thread should be on the top of the list. That information saved my ass.

Chris Butler on NPR

All Things Considered had a great first-person piece by Chris Butler of the Waitresses, the wire recording guy interviewed in the last Tape Op, about his quest to reclaim his old guitar.

When you guys are talking about track count, are you talking 24-bit, 44.1 sample rate, or are you using a higher sample rate? I ask because when I've recorded with my Mac G4 laptop at 96khz, I've had problems playing back more than 14 tracks (with a FW800 external drive). There was also a big thing ...

When you build your spring reverb mic, be sure to use a decent speaker. I made one using a super-cheap, low output speaker and it doesn't work for anything. Not enough sound to get that spring moving. Also, it took me a lot longer to make it than the directions said, but that is probably because I a...

I did plug in the RCA jack and play some music through it and it sounded normal, so I'm pretty positive it's not a phono input. I'll do the 1/4 thing and see how it goes. If it's not a good sound, I'll still be able to plug a standalone preamp into it. I'm thinking my Bellari MP105 would work well f...

This thing has one wire going into it, with an RCA connector on the end. So should I strip that and attach the 1/4 jack there? Or is there something else I should look for?

turning an old stereo console speaker into a guitar amp?

Folks -- So I've got this tube-amp speaker thingy from an old stereo console. It was given to me and it works. Here's a picture of it: http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e160/scottmacdonald00/092606_amp_01.jpg I'd like to install a 1/4" high-impedence input on the thing and make it a guitar amp or a ...

Honky, I've got a Shinybox 23 that you could try out if you want to get together. I used it for male and female vocals and it's pretty brawny.

Nice work!

I'll be doing something similar to this soon, and I'm curious, why were your guitar tracks useless? Bad performance or too much bleed from the drums? Or something else?
