Re: Rockabilly/Americana portastudio
As a guy who owned and used many different cassette portasdudios from the Foxtex X15 through the Tascam 688 I have to say I have zero nostalgia for the format. I owned a 424 MkIII for years, recorded 1 or 2 EPs with it and did some cool experiments, but ultimately the format just wasn't conducive t...

Re: Plugins that deliberately add noise
I can see the appeal for faux lo-fi stuff, but it is really annoying when the noise in on by default.

Re: Truth time- incredibly dumb things you did when you didn't know any better
Recorded an entire song to tape with the guitar mic on a busted speaker. Sounded phasey as hell, but the take was magical and there was too much bleed to replace it. Always make sure the speaker you're miking works!

Re: Going for it
If you want to save an input, try miking the snare from the side! It emphasizes the sound of the shell but still picks up the snares pretty well. The attack from the head will still be in your overheads, anyway. Then, you can put that extra mic somewhere else (center of the kit above the kick is gre...

Re: Being an audio engineer and raising a family... how do you do it?
figure out what problems are currently problems, learn how to solve them, and advertise yourself doing that. This is a great way to put it. Nobody (sadly) is thinking "hmm, I need an audio engineer to mix my record," and then finding your website after some googling. They're thinking "Damn, that li...

Re: Being an audio engineer and raising a family... how do you do it?
I'm not saying I've had any success with this, but I've seen other engineers and producers using social media aggressively to stay "seen," which seems like the only way to keep the work coming. When I say "aggressively," I just mean posting regular updates to show that you're still at it and availab...

Re: Anyone know what's going on with this waveform?
Waveform looks fine, it's not DC offset, it just has bigger peaks on the negative side than the positive. Very common. Yep, this. I struggled with this a lot before realizing that some sounds/recording methods just naturally produce waveforms like that. If it really bothers you, try phase shifting ...

Over-compression is one of the hallmarks of that lo-fi sound - do not fear it!KermitPickle wrote: ↑Mon Oct 19, 2020 5:39 pmI am kinda wary of over-compressing, so I think I might be using it too lightly...I'll have to experiment.
EDIT - I totally missed the point; you're trying to sound less lo-fi. Heh.

Re: help me help a friend
Personally, I love MOTU's stuff, but I'm not sure if they come with amp sims. However, I'm pretty sure Native Instruments' Komplete interfaces come with some form of Guitar Rig (plus a bunch of other stuff): https://www.native-instruments.com/en/catalog/komplete/audio-interfaces/ They also just rele...
