You cant say a rack tom operates from XXHz-XXXhz, becuase it doesnt just "sit there" when struck by a drum stick. It starts with an incredibly high component as the stick hits the head, ... First, I agree with your post that EQ "carving" is "the wrong path", at least most of the time I see it done....

I just want to add that I have used recording techniques, mixing tactics and mastering approaches, but using recording equipment was really the big step for me.

Which begs the question, "Would John Lennon have used a DAW?"

Also, using a high pass filter and getting a "thinner" sound, especially with ganged backing vocals, as well as rolling off the top, can work.

Volume, and room reflections, and two locations of the source sound, which are going to give you some type of filtering, even something of an apparent stereo effect...

Back in the day, I was in such a band, although I was the only guitarist. We recorded the drums with the bass DI'd and mic'd, and a scratch (unrecorded) guitar and unmic'd vocals, then OD'd the guitars and vocals, etc. The scratch guitar was all but inaudible in the drum and bass tracks and the vox ...

Are you sure the board is in good shape? If so, first I would try the board plugged into a different circuit, and maybe even in a different room. I might even bring it to the next building over... Before that, try turning the board, try using a UPS; a cursory examination for loose or unconnected wir...

I'm not an expert, but can suggest checking to see that all of the proprietary crap laptop manufacturers put on to "assist" in updates and with the keyboard and monitors, etc., is under control.

Also, check the AV.

Also, that way you avoid paying for a second OS.

If you aleady have a second OS (I prefer XP Pro), set it up as RodC says, and make the app drive double-boot, so you can choose the OS.

Vintage Guitar can give a pretty good idea of amp prices. I have a blond Mark2B, EC condition, Black widow 12", 60/100 with the graffic EQ and reverb that I value in the area of US$1,000. Were I selling, (I'm not) I'd probably want another $125 for the Anvil road case... Keep in mind the coasts' va...

I don't do it on stuff I engineer; I have never found the need to, yet.

But as I have posted previously, for some reason when I get sent drum tracks they often benefit by nudging them, usually the overheads a little closer to the close mic's.
